GM Duramax 3.0 oil consumption

Guys, manufacturers and engineers know best. If GM says it’s normal than I’m sure a hoard of engineers carefully reviews and studied the problem and deemed it OK. No manufacturer would make a statement that is not backed by cold, hard facts. Their reputation is at stake here.

Just keep giving them $70-$100k for these trucks and be glad they sold you one. 😉
lol, ever heard of a little company called VW that was run by a Nazi in the 21st century?

If I bought one of these new, the first thing I would do, is hook it up a 9,000lb trailer.
Then run the crap out of it and load it hard.
That will seat the rings nicely.

That is the opposite of what every manual I've ever read says.

I’m switching to Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30. Users are reporting significantly less consumption using 5W-30, and there are even a few 5W-30 oils on the dexos D webpage now. However, until the truck’s powertrain warranty expires, 0W-30 is a better happy medium. After warranty, I’ll be switching to 5W-30.

However, I was surprised to find that three nearby lube shops and the dealer wouldn’t use anything above 0W-20 despite explaining 0W-30 has the same winter/cold start viscosity and the hot viscosity is just enough to reduce consumption and wear metals significantly. I interestingly, one of them would allow a non-dexos D 0W-20, even though it might be worse for my emissions system. I guess if I want it done right, I’ll have to do it myself.

Neither one of those has a dexos license if you’re really worried about the warranty. Winter rating is only relevant to your starting temperature. GM would care about dexos, not the winter rating which can shift during use anyway.
