GM dexos™ ?

I know the GM dexos™ approved oils are 5w30 because GM doesn't do things like 5W-20. Would the 5W-20 SN oils from the approved companies still meet GM dexos™ spec's other than viscosity ? Would something like Mobil 1 5W-20 SN still have the extra cleaning, wear protection, and other things that are covered in the dexos spec's or would it just contain the add pack that meets API SN ?

Thanks

No. Beacuse as of right now the Dexos viscosity spec is for a 5W30 viscosity. There are specific addpacks for specific viscosity ranges, so no again.

In my opinion, the current synthetic SN oil offerings are at least as good if not better than Dexos.

Probably the engines that need a dexos1 oil do need the 5w30 grade for viscosity reasons. A 5w30 or 0w30 is the lightest oil I'd run in my factory turbocharged Cruze out of concern for a 20 weight oil getting beat up too much by the turbo. Seeing that dexos1 oils need to be at least semi-synthetic to meet the spec, my guess is that GM wanted the oil to remain fairly shear-stable for things like turbocharger protection and bearing protection.

My answer would be that a GF-5/SN Xw-20 oil would work in a less demanding application assuming driving style was conservative, and that it would vary by application.

Dexos is more stringent,

More stringent than what and in what way?? Certainly not synthetic API rated SN.

dexos1 is more stringent than SN in at least one category, maybe others as well.

The one area I can recall for sure is the maximum spec for Volatility. The dexos1 spec is a lower percentage than the SN spec.

I don't have anything GM so not looking to substitute an oil V , I have Ford and Dodge and they call for 5W-20. I just want to know if xW-20 SN oils are as good as 5w30 dexos, dexos does go beyond SN spec.

If you look at the Jugs of Castrol Edge FST (the Gold Bottle) 5w20 sold at Walmart, it states in the back it "Meets Dexos 1 sepcifications". It is the only 5w20 I have seen that states this. Castrol is not a registered license holder of the dexos 1 ripoff/spec. For give me but I just think Dexos is a bunch of hooey. Just a way to make more money and I hope the lawsuit goes forward.

One Mobil product that's 0w40 (ESP) is licensed for dexos1 so it's not a 5w30 only spec.

I would agree that 5w20 wouldn't be a good choice in my Cruze with the 1.4T.
I would also agree that SN full synthetic should be fine even if it's not dexos1 spec'd (it probably means that the company didn't want to pay the licensing fee, ie: Castrol and Valvoline).

Molecule: I have some SM rated 5w30 Mobil 1 (and other full synthetic oils like Valvoline) in 5w30. Do you think they would work OK in the Cruze turbo if kept to a 5 or 6K interval?

OK thanks, I just cleaned out TS (25 qt.) Mobil 1 5W-20 SN, got it for 2.99 qt...guess the price trumps dexos...

Saw this spider diagram in another thread that compared dexos1 to GF-4 and GF-5. Thought it might give a little more info here.

Is dexos a legit spec? In my opinion yes. Is it a GM cash grab? Maybe so. Do I really care either way? No

I drive a GM product and whether dexos was around or not chances were/are pretty good that I'd choose to run a SOPUS or XOM synthetic anyway. I've been doing so for over ten years anyway. So it really makes no difference to me personally.

Mobil 1 ESP 0w40 meets dexos2 Diesel spec. It is the only non 5w30 on the dexos1 or dexos2 list.

I think if you kept it within a 5k interval it should be ok.

With a turbo, I would certainly have a used oil analysis run on at 5k.

Right. I assumed the original poster was referring to the Dexos1 spec since he mentioned 5W30.

Dexos spec is to combat DI issues with possible fuel dilution from what I was told at the Detroit auto show this past year. He was Chevy rep.

I apologize...my eyesight ain't what it used to be...I didn't see that little '2' next to 'dexos'.

Molacule: Thanks for your opinion....I think I'll use up some SM syn at 5K intervals..

That's only one issue Dexos is supposed to address.
The (or at least AN) other is the VVT system on some engines.
The better cleaning and lubrication that the Dexos 'blend' gives helps keep the VVT system from sludging up.
