The battery system controls cell temperature, manages battery charge and discharge, and packages cells in vehicles. If GM can perform in-house testing of advanced materials provided by suppliers, it believes it will be able to apply its own technologies to advance battery cell systems.

"Producing the first prototype battery cells is a big step forward for the GM China Advanced Technical Center. It is critical for enabling GM to develop smaller, lighter and lower-cost new-generation batteries," John Du, director of GM China's China Science Lab, said in a statement. "Leveraging this success, the independent assessment system for battery materials will help speed up technical progress."

As the world's largest car producer and market, China does not intend to be left out of hybrid car advancement. The Chinese government has stated its intention to up the increase of pure battery, extended-range electric, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by 2020.
 
The funny thing is that more or less ALL advanced battery production (IOW, Li-ion) is done in the Pacific rim.

What is even funnier though is that most of the production of common size cells is highly automated, so the costs shouldnt be all that different being made there vs. here.

Generally the Chinese are only good at buying IP in this space, not inventing it, but with GM attached, they have a good mix.

But I doubt they will bring anything out of the ordinary to this space...

But given the Chinese population and pollution issues, I bet theyll take the energy issues far more seriously than we do here, with out false mix of "free market" and forced requirements based upon croneyism (which Im sure they have there as well)...

Are you being serious? are you saying that the Chinese are acting as a truly free-market competitor that is mostly free of cronyism? I hold you to a much higher standard than this, JMH.

Yeah but it's dirty dirty dirty to the planet. Same reason tanneries are hard to find in the USA.
 
Based on what this article says, it is not about creating an advance battery but more like an automatic tweaking system that produce the same battery differently from different vendor's material / parts, so you will have the same battery with multiple sources.

I do not see any advance technology in this, but I do see this as a way to make battery technology more affordable.

Many of the powders and electrolytes are actually made in the USA/Canada/Japan. This isnt lead-acid or NiCd.

Re-read what I said, Im sure there is plenty of palm greasing there...

But over here much of the "push" on some of this stuff goes with the tides, and other stuff (ethanol for example) is purely pushed based upon one faction or another.

It appears that China may be interested in clean energy to fulfill the populations' needs. Note the $290 Billion in clean energy investment.

They are. Since a few years ago new mopeds are no longer registered, and the mass switched to battery powered bicycle.

The air is very bad there due to diesel and coal fired power plant.
