GM Camaro Recall, 6/13/14

Every camaro from 2010 and newer is recalled because you can accidentally turn off the cars with your knees. Over half a million recalled. Chevy dealers have been told to stop selling Camaros. The Camaro's ignition switch has no parts in common with the Cobalt switches linked to 13 deaths and scores of injuries, and GM says the switch itself meets all engineering standards.

Weird. You could potentially turn off any vehicle with the key in the steering column if you position the seat so that your knees are next to it.
 
Aren't drivers responsible for anything they do anymore? Accidentally turning off a car with your knees sounds like an operator error to me. It is not possible to design a car that can protect drivers from every form of error that they might make.

No kidding.


A person is stupid enough to accidentally shut off the car with their knees,yet they have a licence for operating a motor vehicle on public roadways.

And they think the key location is the problem?

Nothing for the trucks yet? assuming they share the same parts.

Toyota and Saab are the only brands that don't put the key cylinder/ignition switch on the steering column.

Apparently not.

I always thought any input that could be applied or controlled with your knees was a plus, not a liability.

My Jaguar missed that memo.
 
Never set in a new Camaro. I'm short legged and there is no way my knees even come close to the ignition in my wife's Mustang. Are the Camaro's that much different in the seating positions/ignition switch locations than the Mustang?

Only one I could see that would have a problem is my 6'10" son in law. Long legs on that boy!

Porsche, Mercedes, some Chryslers, and most medium duty trucks come to mind.

Agreed.

I mentioned in the GM Key thread that I also think after a certain period of time they should be off the hook.

Personal responsibility. What a concept...
 
Basically, if I wanted to buy one now, I'd have to wait because some people are lummoxes? Part of the issue is that GM is probably overly sensitive about ignition switch matters as of late.
