I've got a 2002 impala with the 38000 that will not rev past 4k rpm. during acceleration it runs fine up to that point and then acts like it has reached a fuel cut off. it has 40k highway miles, but could a spark plug/wire or coil pack be bad? the computer is not throwing any codes, which has me baffled (aren't misfires an error?). any ideas?

Have you replaced your aircleaner and fuel filter lately. Sounds like the engine is starving at higher rpms for air or fuel.

Does it act like it's actually hitting a rev-limiter? If so, the ECU is programmed with I believe a 4,000 rpm rev-limiter for neutral and park. Maybe something is making your ECU thinks it's in neutral or park when it's actually in drive, at least for controlling that 4,000 rpm limiter

It's a shot in the dark I guess!

Could also be a bad fuel pressure regulator. Check the vac line to the FPR to see if it's loose or leaking (fuel-rail area). G/luck

Sounds like one of your DIS coil packs may have failed.

This is possible as sometimes your OBDII will not trip the idiot SES light unless the misfires are VERY bad.

Get it checked it as soon as you can. It sounds like a Fuel problem though-

For the most part the GM 3800 is an extremely reliable engine. *LoL* Gm just socks it to you on some flimsy sensors and interior components that are designed to break early and kill your budget
