!999 Chevy Malibu, The glove box latch was hard to open and i broke it off,so now I cannot get the glove box open. And I need to know how to repair. Thanks. BTW just bought the car today for my Grandson and Already broke something.Any help would be nice. Thanks

You'll probably have to break something to get in.

It's probably a "safety latch" that holds a d-shaped piece of metal just like the car door.

I would do a horizontal cut in the middle of the door with an angle grinder or what have you, it will be plastic and easy enough. Unfold it then go at the latch guts which will be hanging there with a screwdriver.

Or you could tell him you'd love to sign the car over but the title paperwork is in the glovebox... and he'll have to figure it out!

Yeah I would take it easy on that; probably the dash support that holds the latch receiver also helps point the passenger airbag.

Consider this though, some glove box hinges pop loose if the bottom of the box is folded enough, maybe a crowbar UNDER the door at the 6 oclock position might pop it loose.

If there is a fusebox on the r/s of the dash you may be able to reach thru there and into the glovebox.

If there is a hinge at the bottom (by your knees/lap) there are probably several screws you could remove, then simply drop or pull the lid away from the latch. Don't tear up anything you don't have to.

Check with a salvage yard. The slip in glove box is a 'pop in' item. Ripe, drill, cut the broken one out and replace the whole thing.
IF it's lockable, take the new lock and have it retumbled by a competent lock smith.

Thanks for all the replies, I was able to insert a small screwdriver into the latch and open the box. I searched all over the internet for a replacement latch (no find) . Guess i will try junkyard. Thanks
