Are you sure the flywheel has been machined flat?

Most older VW's specify a 75W90.

I don't think a thicker oil is going to cure the chatter.

Out of balance could be another possibility. However reduced mass will make it more susceptible to torsional oscillation.

The flywheel is a single mass, the OEM flywheel was dual mass. The lighter weight of the flywheel doesn't absorb the vibrations. I need to run a thicker oil to quiet gear chatter.

I agree with MolaKule in that I don't think that 'thicker' oil will fix it and you may even cause more problems by trying that route. I think that having made your choice you just have to live with it. Is it really that bad?

Which trans is this? I've got an 02J and run Synchromesh. I tried a 75w90, it caused notchy shifts when cold. Went back to Synchromesh.

I am really questioning that is is gear chatter.

I think Whitewolf hit the nail on the head.

The lighter mass yields more torsional vibration so anything that is loosy goosy is going to vibrate upon engagement.

In what condition are the motor mounts, transxle mounts, and exhaust system?

All mounts are new. It's an 02m transmission and every 02m has this problem with a lightweight flywheel. The clutch does not chatter when engaged, only in neutral.
I currently run 75w90 in it.

Does anyone know of a GL4 rated 75w140? I see elf makes some for Europe, but unavailable in the u.s.

My apologies for the earlier post regarding Royal Purple Max Gear. That was based upon outdated information on the Pep Boys website. That same information indicated that RP Max Gear was yellow metal friendly, and yet it would appear that it is among the worst offenders in that regard according to ASTM D130 test results posted here and elsewhere.

This evening I topped off the vintage 1985 Troy-Bilt Pony with Mobil1 75w140. Hopefully it will not prove too thin for that application, as it appears that yellow metal friendly 85w140 gear oils are stored next to the unicorns, leprechauns, and honest politicians in every auto parts store.

yellow metal friendly oil for gl-4 application? any transmission oil that pass the allison tes-295 test ( make sure allison has an an number for it otherwise its just hearsay and not valid! that number is hard to get and prove that the oil pass muster!
it wont be proper viscosity but will still likely better then what car or pick up brand ask ,if it is for a differnetial gear oil ? get a j2360 tested oil!do not put j2360 oil in a gl4 application .if you really want a gl4 oil

i propose you to use this oil for comparision or use
