What are "GL" oil ratings or classifications, i.e GL-3 vs. GL-4 etc.? I tried the search function to no avail. Thanks for your help.

The GL ratings are for gear oil. They usually indicate the amount of extreme pressure additives contained within the oil. It is not a rating of quality or an ability to conform to any specs like the API SM rating. The use of a gear oil with a GL rating over GL-4 in a manual transmission containing yellow metals may cause corrosion at high temperatures.
