getting the perfect quart measurment

I was always coming up under. SOP on anything bigger than an asian 4 cyl was to throw 4 quarts in, let it run to fill the filter, then top it off. Charged extra for more than 5 quarts. After doing some reading on a VW forum I read that I could safely overfill my crankcase by like 2 or so quarts. Ever since then, although the rated capacity is 4.5qt I just dump in 5. The oil I buy comes in 5L containers, hence the amount. I suspect there is a good half-qt left someplace, so I often have it appreciably overfilled. But there is no slapping of the oil, and, I don't have to add oil for the duration (I check it at least once/month, sometimes more often, and it will use a quart every 10k, with it being more rapidly burned at the end).

I figure, with a longer OCI, having extra oil isn't a bad thing. It certainly beats keeping a partially filled jug.

In decades of working on vehicles for a living, I have never come across a situation where a perfect qt. was needed.
Never even thought about it once.

I used to do that. 4 cyls = 4 quarts. Add 4 quarts, done.

One of the techs at the shop I worked at in college didn't catch on and instead of putting 1.25 gallons (5 quarts) in a 4 banger, tried to get 4 gallons (16 quarts) in it.

We lifted it back up and drained it all... and let it drain for quite some time, before putting the 4.0 quarts recommended back in it. We started it, and it ran fine. We let it idle for awhile then took it for a drive around the block and checked the dipstick.
Everything seemed to work ok.
I was surprised. I figured that one would have to dissemble the head and suck it out of the cylinders after that.


Everything will drain out. Probably did a little extra cleaning. I assume the engine was not started?

That sounds like a good idea. would be very close if I out a quart out of the gallon container. those stories about the oil guns and oil running all over the place must have been a sight to see.

to all thanks for the replies. I know we do not need a perfect quart but was curious how everybody would go about getting close to a 1 quart measurement out of the gallon jug. most people would just use the line on the side of the jug but this is Bitog so we must have another solution lol !

I dump 2-3 qts in, start it, let it pump back up, shut down and fill it till I reach the full mark on the dipstick. Whatever is left in the jug gets dumped into a top off jug of appropriate weight.
