HI, I'm new to the forum, and I know this subject has been discussed ad nauseum, but no matter where I look, brick and mortar stores or on line, I can't locate and buy the German Castrol. I own an Audi A4 1.8 turbo, '03, and a BMW 530i, '05. I use Mobil 1 0w40 in the Audi. The BMW calls for 5w30 synthetic, BMW, or Castrol. I know the BMW- Castrol relationship is mostly marketing, but I really would like to use it. I live in Morgantown, WV., not exactly the heart of whats happening, so where can I find the oil, and what do you folks suggest? Thanks!

In the US, it seems that GC can only be found at AutoZone. Looks like regular Castrol Syntec 0w-30, but says "made in germany" on the back.

Thanks, but I've checked with every AutoZone in the region, and when I ask them about the "German Castrol", they all get the look on their faces that resembles "raccoons sittin' around a fishin' hole."
As a rule, AutoZone employees know nothing of German Castrol. This stuff has the same bar code as the old 0w30 and it scans into the computer the same way. It is in your best interest not to talk to most AutoZone clerks any more than you have to.
You need to go pick up the bottles of Castrol Syntec 0w-30, turn them around and look at the back. If it says "made in Germany", you've found it.
You may need to try a few different AutoZone stores before you find the stuff. I live within 20 miles of 2 different AutoZones. Out of these three stores, only one has GC, and it is the store in the smallest town (a city of about 6,000 people).

We have six or seven AZ stores in Pensacola (where I live) and a few more than that in New Orleans (where I work). I have hunted in all of them. . . Roughly speaking, 3/4 of the stores have GC in stock. The others seem to have stagnant (dust collecting) stock of the old, "yellow label" pre-GC stuff. "German Castrol" is just an internet (mostly BITOG, actually) buzz phrase for the German-made stuff. AZ employees know nothing of GC; in fact, it has the same stock number/UPC as the older stuff. GC is obviously a successor product to the US made version. Actually, one AZ guy at my "primary" store is starting to catch on that strange people are looking for this particular oil. So, in summary, first, you're on your own looking for GC, and second, if you look hard enough, you'll ususally find plenty of it.

Medic, not so with my Autozone manager. Told him what the difference was and he uses it in his Camaro and has all of the 0W30 Made in Germany in the first Castrol section all lined up in a row.
