German Castrol Craze?

darn it - so although my BMW is quiet and smooth with the gold GC, should I not be happy because it's the 'newer' POA formula or what ?

What else can I use then? (other than M1 o/40)

If you search on German websites for VW 503.01, every oil that I have seen that meets that spec is listed as 'fully synthetic'. In Germany, that means group 4 and/or 5.

In a warm climate GC is still a good choice.
But you make a good point, there isn't a lot of HTHS vis 3.5cP 30wt oils readily available from which to choose.
But off the top of my head there's QS Euro 5W-30.
Lucas 0W-30 with it's 189 VI.
Pennzoil Euro 5W-40, HTHS 3.7cP; could blend in some 5W-30 PU to make it a bit lighter.
BMW 5W-30
Even the M1 0W-40 can be lighted to HTHS 3.5cP by blending in some AFE 0W-30.

And in Canada we also have ESSO XD-3 0W-30 (175 VI)
Shell Rotella T5 0W-30 (180 VI)
PC Duron 0W-30 (180 VI)

Also have Rotella T6 in Canada

What's wrong with M1 0w40? I'm using it in my M5.

Nothing, but this thread is about the GC craze...

I believe when TomNJ did the analysis of the Mobil 1 oils, he also tested a current (at that time) sample of GC gold and indicated it was mostly PAO.

At least that's what I recall from memory...

I kept my list of Cdn substitutes to 0W-30's.
IMO PAO based XD-3 is clearly superior to GC.

T6 is a heavy 5W-40 which is not a substitute for GC.
Besides we have full syn T5 0W-40 which I prefer to T6 anyway if you require a HTHS 4.0cP oil.

Nothing really but it throws higher Iron numbers and sheared out of the 40 weight viscosity in a 5000 mi oci than GC Green that didn't shear and had very low wear numbers in my 1.8T. I'm still using GC Green from my stash in my 2000 A4.

Do you remember what it sheared to? Was it around the same weight as GC by chance

And the wear numbers mean what, exactly?

Not taking that bait. It's what every you want it to mean. I'm certain you'll think of something.

It seems as though you took the bait, hook, line, and sinker. I don't know how to interpret your comments except as either an elaborate way to say you are unable to defend yourself on this point, or an admission that you look at the numbers and make them fit your ideas rather than understanding what they mean and making your ideas fit the facts.

Ok..... the first UOA I did on GC in my application the wear metals PPM readings were such that it was hard to tell if they were generated from use in the engine during the OCI or from those present in the GC virgin oil per VOA posted there. All are available via search. I might not have posted in a long time or as active as I once was but yeah I know what they mean.

As I recall the original question was why the GC craze. Just adding my $.02 as to contributing factor - little to no shearing and good UOA number particularly in applications what are hard on oil.

I got good results on the UOA of the M1 0W40 in my Volvo...very low Fe and other metals...depends on the application of course, but I will keep using it...
