"Subaru Corp. FUJHY 1.37% said Friday it plans to recall as many as 2.3 million Impreza and Forester vehicles world-wide after discovering that certain chemical compounds released by everyday products such as cosmetics, fabric softener or car polish could cause parts to malfunction."

That's a new one... I'd like to know how they figured it out.

Guess what, fabric softener, interior protectant, moisturizer, lotion and most cosmetics have surfactants, simethicone/dimethicone and sodium lauryl sulfate.

Silicon oil was stated as being one culprit. I imagine it off gasses and migrates in the heat.

I call roadside assistance to change my tire when needed. So what?
That's what it's there for. I'm capable but why risk my life on the side of a road and in bad weather (If it's not raining it's usually snowing).

Exactly. Also, for a lot of people it's almost impossible to loosen the lug nuts with the small lug wrench that comes with the vehicle.

True.... I am lucky because my tire tool that came with my car is whoop donkey tough

It is substantial and I could probably jump on it and it wouldn't hurt it.

Well in my defense I pulled it from the WSJ and didn't post the entire story because it's behind a pay wall.

Yes and to clarify, there seems to be a issue with certain chemicals in these detailers or cleaners that when sprayed around the brake pedal it affects the brake switch. The news is blowing this up way beyond realism.

This was on parking lot! Sorry, but if you need road assistance in 30's on parking lot of your work, some things some where went wrong.

That means lug nut is over tighten. Wrench that comes with a vehicle is design precisely for that, to loosen THAT lug nut.

Subaru will do a recall - but it's really a matter of education to detail staff and car washes. But, a lot of them are undocumented and speak just enough English to get by. Silicones rule in the detail shop and car wash. And flat-rate dealer techs love indiscriminately spraying silicone spray to make things slip on easier. When I worked at the dealer, silicone spray was one thing the parts department couldn't keep in stock.

I still wouldn't do it. I paid for the roadside assistance either included in my vehicle purchase price or a separate plan and I need to get my monies worth. Further you try getting the tire carrier out from under the center of the caravan with a bad back. No thank you. Especially not in -4F / -20c temps here currently with snow.

Yep I agree. The typical lug wrench that is at a angle with about 12 inches of handle to work with is pretty useless on a lug that has been put on with a impact wrench. The older cross type lug wrenches were better but even then you needed muscles or two people.

Safety is a concern as well. The side of a highway or a dark street in the city is no place to be out in. In the countryside in Idaho, no problem. On a street in Seattle, forget it.
