GenIV LS water pump into a GenIII LS engine

As part of my 02 Silverado experimentation one of them was to see if a GenIV LS water pump will fit a GenIII LS engine. And Yes It Did.

Old Pump:

Leak from weep hole. All that black stuff doesn't look like good news:

GenIV pump installed:

Hoses and belt installed. You will need to change the upper radiator hose since the outlet coming out of the pump is shorter.

The gap between the pump and timing chain cover. GenIV's moved the cam sensor to the front cover needing the extra space. That means the impeller is moved forward and the shaft shortened to keep the same pulley height.

Having this tool makes R&R much faster. Pick one of these up with the water pump kit.

GM part number for the complete pump and thermostat kit. Also if this is the first time changing the pump pickup a new belt, tensioner, idler, A/C belt, lower and upper rad hoses. Might was well change everything since you're in there:

Is there any benefit to the change? What does the tool accomplish? I've installed these pumps before, I'm drawing a blank.

No real benefit but for me this pump was cheaper on amazon. OEM pump came with gaskets and thermostat already then buying the updated style where you need to buy the updated thermostat and housing. Tool is for removing the hose clamps since some of the clamps are in a tight location since I don't want to fumble with pliers and have the hose clamps shoot out onto the street.

Well,if they ever discontinue the older pump,you at least know the later one will retrofit. lol

That tool enables you to remove spring clamps more easily. In fact, some spring clamps are so awkwardly installed that you can't do the job in a reasonable amount of time if you have ordinary pliers.

I have the Mayhew brand spring clamp tool, but newer spring clamp tools are better. Tool truck guys sell large numbers of repair parts for the Mayhew spring clamp remover.

As for a Gen IV pumps on a GEN III engine, I clicked on this thread just to ask "What is the benefit?"

I'm not the OP but we have the same tool and bought it locally at Sears.
