I broke out my Coleman Powermate 5KW generator today and serviced it. It's been since last winter since I last ran it and it started on the first pull. After letting the engine warm up I changed the oil and added a qt of fresh gas along with some Sta Bil. Then ran the unit for 1/2 Hr and powered up two 1500 watt heaters. All worked well, then let the engine die down by stopping the fuel supply. Hopefully I won't need it but you never know.

I also have a Coleman 5KW and I converted it to LP gas with a kit I bought on line just in case you have a sourse for LP already. It can still use gasoline if need be. I don't have to store a lot of gasoline anymore since I already had a 500 gallon LP gas tank.
I just did moms 6.5kW Honda that runs on LP. she put 75hrs on it since January. warmed ,drained filled w/PP. did the snow blower while I was at it. should be good for another 150 hrs.

Since my house is all electric I don't have a large source of LP. However I do store 30 gals of gas which I rotate into the cars every 6 months.

Not sure. My tank holds 6 gallons and at 2.5 KW(1/2 power) is supposed to run 11 hrs. If we had an extended outage I probably could squeeze 20 hrs to 5-6 gallons. We do have a few stations around here that has back up power so I can get fuel if needed.

The problem is predicting what kind of outage will be next.
Weather related:
1) localized, you can drive to areas not effected
2) widespread, drive to a city, they will have power before the rural areas.
Grid related:
Pray its in another state
If propane generator you could invite neighbors over to cook food in their refrig that was getting warm, take a hot shower and leave your full BBQ propane tank at the door.
