over the last year I have used Shell Rotella T6 5w40 and our weather here ranges from winters in the 20's to 30s on a average to summers in the 70-90*F on average. should I keep using the 5w40 or switch to the Shell Rotella triple T 15w40. I change the oil/filter every 5k But I don't want to run a oil that is too thin in the summer or one that too thick in the winter. it is my understanding since this is a engine that uses the HEUI systems it beats the snot out of oil.

They're both a 40w when hot so that throws the too thick or thin argument out the window. The 5w will get the oil flowing faster than the 15w will in colder temps. Id stick with the 5w-40 as it is synthetic and the 15w is conventional. The 5w-40 will help a lot in the colder temps and won't make a difference in warmer temps.
It's really hard to beat that Rotella T6 with regard to quality and price.

Does a 6.0 ever! Honestly I would run a 10w30 diesel rated (CI-4 or CJ-4) oil, they seem to be more shear stable than the 5w40 while still giving good cold weather cranking.

Does a 6.0 ever! Honestly I would run a 10w30 diesel rated (CI-4 or CJ-4) oil, they seem to be more shear stable than the 5w40 while still giving good cold weather cranking.

The topic of synthetics vs convetional oils (or even semi-syns) is often misunderstood.
The use of premium fluids should be based upon your OCI. If you're not going to greatly extend the OCI, then synthetics really don't pay out and can cost you dearly.
A good quality 10w30 HDEO will work well year round, and so would a 15w40. The 10w30 will help lessen or eliminate the "romp" associated with HEUI in winter. It will also shear much less, if at all, than the 40 grade. (For some reason it's as if the HEUI simply prefers the thinner oils.)

All great choices. 15w40, in most cases is not needed and wastes fuel. Unless your towing heavy loads in the heat of the summer, 10w30 is a great route to go.

I've had great success, with excellent used oil analysis, using conventional 10w30 Rotella in heavy towing in summer heat in CO, UT and AZ. Synthetics and heavy grades are not a necessity, as many would believe. They certainly don't hurt, but the "need" is overblown IMO.

I just changed my 6.0 over to 10w30 this past weekend. I bought it in October (I'm the 2nd owner) and without great maintenance records, threw 4 gallons of Delvac 15w40 in it immediately. After researching BITOG,(and a few other boards), I did the fuel pressure spring replacement, coolant (Cat spec), thermostat, air filter, and oil again, using Rotella 10w30 Triple Protection, this past weekend. I added Redline's diesel fuel catalyst, and went to get the camper out of storage. I'll double check next tank, but my math says I got 22MPG on the highway unloaded, and 13 towing. I'm not worried at all about towing with a 10w30, or using it in a PS.
