Gen X most likely to change their own oil - according to survey

'89 Millennial here. It's a tossup between DIY and the occasional dealer jobber. The Camry and Jetta are well past their free services so I have a collection of oil filters for them and I DIY those. My trucks as of late have been new or new enough to still have the free changes from Toyota. However they don't do them as often as I like. I would usually DIY the ones in between. Last month I took my 4th gen in for the 6mo service and paid the extra for them to change the oil/filter. Won't be doing that again. $88 and I waited almost 2 hours. I'll DIY them in between the free ones from now on. The truck takes the same filter for the Camry so I have plenty on hand.

Before being able to afford new vehicles I DIY'ed everything. Was always cheaper and assured a better job. Bought a 2007 Nissan Frontier used. Immediately took it on a trip (2,000 miles). Came back and did an oil change to find the oil filter was barely tighter than finger tight. That was lucky!

I first learned to change my own oil when I was 16 years old and have done almost every single one of my oil changes ever since. I taught my son how to change the oil in his cars when he was 16 and he has never had anyone else change his oil ever. 😎

I’m a generation X who generally changes my own oil. Both my kids moved a 1000 miles from home for college and never moved back home. When their cars (both Chevy Cruzes) needed oil changes, I generally took them to the dealer while visiting them. It was $65 and included a tire rotation, water/coffee/snacks, sometimes a wash, and 20 point inspection. I’d try to find a dealer near a park and go for a walk while waiting the typical 1-2 hours the change took. The last quick oil change place I took my daughter’s car to in Tampa was $120, so there was even an economy in the dealer.
