On this day in 1783 General George Washington issued his famous Farewell Address to the US Army near Princeton, NJ. Alexander Hamilton penned much of the document along with James Madision and of course Washington himself.

Washington offered his advice to the citizens of the United States. His key points were to warn Americans against the danger of political parties, to remain neutral in foreign conflicts and to celebrate their achievements.

Washington had a lot of farewell addresses ...

His farewell to the Army wasn't particularly a warning, and was more about encouraging the troops to continue their zeal into civilian life. There was also no mention of foreign conflicts. His address to the Army was essentially about their reintegration into society.

Essentially, he had several speeches; each one unique to those he sought to address; the citizens, the troops, and his officers.
Each had its own merits, based on the audience.

Humans are lazy and tribal by nature. It's both a strength and a weakness.

This is an excellent book about Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, Adams and the others. One entire chapter is a deep dive into Washington's relationship with Jefferson and that farwell address. The most fascinating theme of the book is the relationship between John Adams and TJ. That must be where the term 'frenemy' derives from.
