Trying to decide what brand gear oil in my 05 fronty... Book says full syn. 75-90, for auto 2wd,I was thinking castrol ? Anyone ever use it? Seems to be about $2.00 bucks cheaper than M1 and lucas

If there is Advance Auto Parts in your area I'd buy Mobil 1 75W-90 online using discount codes and pick up in store. That should be as cheap as it gets for synthetic gear oil.

+1 on that. That's what I did

If you buy enough, you can use online coupons and ship it to your home direct.

When you mention the book "says full syn. 75-90", is there a specific requirement that they address, or simply "recommend"?

There are many robust and hearty dinos that meet the same performance criteria of many syns.

follow the links:

Check out the current QPL list (they update it about once a month)

You will see many dino lubes on there that meet the tough SAE J2360 spec.

I'm not saying you should not use syns; there are some good reasons to use syns (uber cold temps and greatly extended OCIs).

I'm just stating you may not NEED syns. I would recommend using whatever the OEM specs, if under warranty. However, don't be confused by what is recommended and what required. Do some research.

Ironicaly, the last time I checked, the Mobil 1 gear lube was NOT on the approved list, but their dino Mobilube was! The Mobil Delvac syn gear oil is on the list, but not the typical and common Mobil 1 gear lube at the parts store. That does not mean that the Mobil 1 is not capable, but it does infer that it either cannot pass the standard, or they choose not to submit it for testing (we do not know which, because the PRI does not report what fails, only what passes). But we do know that the Mobilube dino gear oil is approved to that standard.

I have a 2007 Fronty and use Mobil 1 75W-90 in both the front and rear diff. Excellent performance and no complaints.

I used Castrol in my front differential for about 67K (about 1500 miles of actual use) and it worked well, but I switched to Amsoil on the next OC with the thought to further extend the OCI. I have also used M1 in the past with good results.

If I had to choose between the Castrol and the M1, I would go M1 especially at the price difference that you mention. Also, as others have mentioned AAP usually has "codes" that can be used to further push the cost down.

Buy the cheapest gear oil that meets your required spec. It won't matter which brand you choose.
