So I recently picked up a kia with the 1.6 for a smoking deal.
140k
per the po dealer did a compression test and number 3 cylinder has 40 psi the rest were within spec told them they need a new engine . No oil burning problems

Haven't got a chance to do a compression test myself to verify but did get a chance to throw my bore scope in the cylinder. Walls and top of piston look fine but top of cylinder and valve are caked up pretty bad . Car runs rough at idle and up to 1500 rpm but smooths out after that. No smoke ,knocking, pinging
Thinking of pulling the intake and walnut blasting the valves and pulling the spark plugs and filling each cylinder with some seafoam or something similar. Then running another compression test . Can't imagine the engine being shot at 140k

That would be the cheaper attempt. I'd wager the valve is the culprit. Let us know how it works out.

Piston soak with Berrymans Chemtool B12. Forget the seafoam. I just did this 4 weeks ago on a KIA Rio with the same 1.6L. This one has 152K on it. Just put in a new Catalytic converter and O2 sensors also. It was burning oil pretty bad.

Worked great. I have not done anything with the intake valves.
