This is the 1st GC run in my LS1 and all other oil changes were right around 3,000 miles so I tested the GC at 3,000 to get a direct camparison.

25,000 total miles on engine. Rebuilt at 12,000(piston slap) 13,000 sense rebuild.

A K&N oil filter was used this time vs. Napa Golds for all other runs.

Napa Gold Air filter is in it's 3 oil change interval.

1st collum is GC then Mobil 1 10w30, Mobil 1 10w30, Halvoline 5w30 conventional(used for engine rebuild), Mobil 1 5w30. All aprox. 3,000 miles

GC/Mobil 1/Mobil 1/Halvo/Mobil 1

Aluminum 2/2/3/2/3

Chromium 1/1/1/1/1

Iron 10/12/31/9/16

Copper 44/56/63/52/118

Lead 5/5/6/4/8

Tin 1/3/6/3/3

Molybdenum 10/60/74/65/68

Nickel 0/1/1/0/1

Manganese 1/1/1/1/0

Potassium 3/3/2/2/0

Boron 17/140/152/119/157

Silicon 10/12/23/37/14

Sodium 3/6/6/2/9

Calcium 2783/2226/2485/2174/3397

Magnesium 102/14/17/27/17

Phosphorus 751/678/710/782/709

Zinc 821/753/858/920/933

Viscosity @ 210F 67.3

Flashpoint 410

Fuel 0

Antifreeze 0

Water 0

Insolubles 0.1

TBN 4.8

This oil change interval I did NOT use Lube Control but all other's except the Halvoline I used LC.

Fuel Power was used every single tank!!!!!!!

This was an old batch of GC (1st generation) and IIRC it had 9ppm Iron in it to begin with so I wonder if the iron is lower then 10ppm but if not that is still outstanding for this engine!

This engine was rebuilt at 12,000 miles for oil consumption and knocking(piston slap). Oil burning is almost gone now but the engine is still "dieseling" a bit. It runs great and is very strong!

Comments welcome!

Your numbers look good.

Your cooper is coming down nicely. Your next run with GC will look even better.

The GC worked well

It seems the Havoline 10W40 held it's own also for a buck a quart oil

at 3000 mile OCI they are all about the same for basic wear numbers and by switching around there really is not much of a trend to look at other then copper. If you are going to stay with 3000 don't waste your money on synthetics, they give no noticeable benefit with the UOA you have posted

Yeah they all look pretty close. Was the Havoline immediately after the rebuild? Do you have the TBN and viscosities for the previous runs?

The GC I put in for the 2nd GC run was from the 2nd batch but I forget the numbers. I have the TBN from the other used oil analysis but I'll have to dig them up but the last M1 TBN was 5.4. I'm using Synthetics because I plan on extending the drain to 10K soon. I just wanted to get an idea of between M1 and GC which are close but GC did show better results plus oil changes are cheep even using syns what is $30 over 4 months, nothing!

I did not jump around using oil. The only reason for the Halvoline was to help re-break in the rebuilt engine. GC showed the best results over the 3 M1 OCI's, M1 once showed 31ppm iron!!! 10 for GC is a much better result in my eyes, that is 2 thirds less wear!

I think I will stick with this oil.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few Amsoil ATM used oil analysis in the LS1. It's about 11.9 cst and has a HT/HS of 3.5.

Chris,

Good report!
Havoline looks very impressive despite going through break-in. Even more impressive considering the silicon for that OCI, which I know some is due to new gaskets.....but a lot of it is due to dust getting in the engine while it had open heart surgery.

Have been considering GC for my 2004 5.3L Suburban. However, this report convinces me that the Havoline is fantastic dino!!!! I feel better on 4-5K OCI anyway.

Thanks for the report!

Yeah, same here. IF one-off used oil analysis were meaningful I'd say this was proof-positive that Havoline (and probably Chevron Supreme) is better oil than GC or M1. Since they're NOT meaningful I'll just note that I returned my GC and bought some SM/GF-4 conventional.

I really WANT synthetic to be the hands-down best and worth the extra money (actually, I want RedLine to be the best

), but I'm just going with conventional oil and a slightly more conservative OCI and putting the extra $25 back in my pocket.

These are good numbers for this engine compared with some posted in the used oil analysis section. That GC outperformed the M1, but good old Havoline dino did well too. What make you decide to use the 10W-40 grade Havoline? After seeing this report and the used oil analysis posted by bretfraz....you have to believe that GC does better than M1 in these engines. However...Havoline at
I always liked those Camaros. Wish I had bought one before they left the line-up. Thanks for posting your used oil analysis!

I would recommend that over the long haul you stick with the Green but there is evidence the Green may be morphing into Amber and I'm not prepared to tell you to go with an unknown. (Wonder how many will read the above and think, "What IS he talking about?

More than will admit to it.

Chris,

If you want to compare PAO/Ester synthetics, you need to use drain intervals of at least 7500 miles. Anything less barely stresses an ACEA "A3/B4" quality oil, so it's tough to draw any conclusions from the data. There is also an uncertainly associated with the spectrographic analysis results. This is more of a factor with very short drains and low wear metal concentrations.

Looks like my thread came back to life! I was doing short OCI to see how the rebuild was doing and I'm now extending the OCI out quiet a bit using GC. I'll post my next results ASAP, I'm working on the mileage everyday!
