My Corolla computer is about 2MPG optimistic.
Unusually cold weather, Winter gasoline, and Winter tires have all brought my mileage (as calculated by ME) down from 34-36MPG to 31-33MPG. I've seen this before, it will start going up soon.
Cruise Control only improves fuel economy for the heavy footed and in bureaucrat's minds. If traffic allows, coasting over the top of hills, picking up speed in the downhills, and holding a speed up hill that doesn't force a downshift, you can easily beat the CC for fuel economy.

The hiway was 4 lane and not flat. rolling hills, flat stretches etc.
Rolling hills can kill if not approached the "right" way. Were you using cruise control? What kind of road surface (concrete/asphalt/chip seal)? Outside temperatures? Tire pressure?
I ask these more as rhetorical questions as fuel economy is a bit capricious. It rides on a lot of little things.
yes, cruise was on the whole time. Plus I have new tires on it. Road surface was varied, concrete to asphalt then back again.
I need to check the odometer to see how close it actually is.
Ok so I can see 31mpg. New treads take 5k or so to "break in" and give optimal mileage, and 70mph is hardly the most economical speed, plus the CC on hills can be overly aggressive on climbs.
I tend to either coast or use light throttle to gain speed down hills, and do a slow speed bleed back up them. That's usually a good way to add about 3mpg vs. cruise on hilly terrain. Slowing down will help too as will bumping tire pressure up.

Yeah the tires were put on the night before. The EPA says the Camry gets 32 MPG. Not complaining at all.
Next trip to the inlaws I will keep the cruise off and see what happens. There may have been wind too. There are so many variables.

Some cars allow you to adjust the MPG trip function with correct software. VW/Audi Ross Tech Vagcom allows percentage adjustment.
I have adjusted mu Scanguage II to be almost perfect.
