255w has been great for me too.

I smashed my Mio to bits and bought the 255w a week later when it was on sale. Never looked back or regretted it. I'm glad the Mio is destroyed so that it can't cause anyone else's blood pressure to raise the way it did mine.

My Garmin Units work great. FOr the poster who was sent down surface streets.. that's a common mistake in the settings. Simply set to the "Fastest Route. Not the SHortest Route of the Pedestrian route. Mine is multilingual.accented (WHich is nice) and uses the SD card feature which I load another database of Map Data on to find locations that are specific for my work.

I've had the 755T for over a year now. It's been generally good except for one annoying thing: the touch pad keyboard - I swear that at least 50% of the time, when you touch a given letter, it'll interpret it as something else - sometimes not even a letter that's in the vicinity but something totally in a different part of the keyboard. Hence, typing any address in takes significantly longer than it should.

If you are responding to my post about surface streets in Atlanta, we actually changed the settings to wrong on purpose since the correct settings weren't getting it done. There was no difference in the route, if I recall correctly, but it certainly didn't put us on the interstate.

97tbird, did you buy your GPS yet? I just bought the 285WT you posted originally. I got the 2-day shipping with Prime, can't wait to try it out! I finally splurged

If you haven't bought yours yet, I'd be glad to let you know how it works out for me as soon as I get it.

I had a heck of a time debating between the 285w, the 265w and the 260w. I didn't think it was worth paying extra for the traffic reports that the 265 gives you so I went with the cheaper alternative. I was even considering a Tom Tom one 130 or whatever it's called, saw it on sale for $75 but I heard it was pretty slow, and it has a smaller screen and less features. I have a Bluetooth phone but I've never used the feature before... I'm curious to see how that will turn out.

Just as an aside, you should always search online for the model number of your GPS unit and the word "hacks." I was able to make my parent's old Mio (which ran on Cobia hardware, IIRC) do turn by turn spoken navigation when that was originally not intended to be a feature of that model.

I will give a shout out for the 755t and 765t. My brother has the 755 and I have the 765 (w/ bluetooth) I like the hands free calling. Also I like the fact I can load all my songs on an SD card and use it like an I-pod. Lane assist seems like it will be a big help, if I ever get to somewhere that it applies!

I got my 285W this morning. I went to go set it up in the 15 degree weather and it said to go outside where I can have a clear, unobstructed view to acquire satellites for the first time. I stood out there freezing my butt off for 10 minutes before I gave up and went back in the garage and plugged it into my car again. The little status bar is annoying because it will move like it's doing something, then the status will go backwards on the bar! How dumb is that? It eventually did get the satellites from the comfort of my car after 5 more minutes or so. Aside from that brief hiccup, everything seems to be working good. I tested the Bluetooth connectivity and that worked, except for the blackberry holster not allowing it to connect to the device... lame! I took a road trip with my girlfriend today and it worked great, the points of interest are nice even though the two places we wanted to go to were now out of business (how old is that list on there?! lol) All in all, I'm satisfied for $135. I still haven't tried the MSN Direct thing yet though.

I have one of those too. It is a really nice GPS. I liked it so much that I purchased the lifetime map updates for it. I used a 10% off coupon that I received when I registered it (after a few years) to take a few dollars off the map update.

The only downside to it is that updating the maps can take an hour or two, so it should be done well in advance of any trips.

got a nuvi 255w for christmas. nice little thing. sucks that msn is dumping traffic, cuz i dont have the lifetie traffic version, though. oh well i love it anyway.

Once satellites have been acquired for the first time it doesn't take nearly as long for subsequent acquisitions. I think it logs which satellites were used last and tries to use those same ones on it's next powerup. You can probably get a whole bunch of updates for the unit form Garmin.com it's a very easy process. They might even have a new list of POIs. Check out the different vehicles that can be loaded as your car marker on the map. I use a lawn mower, but you can choose everything from a beachball to a jet.

A little update to my experience, I figured out the bluetooth connectivity issue. Apparently you have to accept the connection on your phone otherwise it will say "Error connecting to phone" within a few minutes and I didn't see it, since it was in the holster. As for the satellites, it has been updating a lot quicker, sometimes instantly. However, I took my GPS out of town and used it to navigate around there but turned it off since we knew the way home. Came home, and turned it on and it wouldn't acquire the satellites again for a good 5-10 minutes. I'll have to check out those updates on their website, thanks for the tip. I found out about the Bing Maps and how you can put POIs from there on your MSN Direct thing, but I haven't gotten that all completely figured out yet.

I find the Garmin friction mount a superior mounting method over the suction cup....I found one at Best Buy for about $20.......

This mount is very versatile....no more suction issues, or attracting thieves with suction marks......

On many cars, this allows the unit to be located closer to the driver.......I put mine on the console center ridge, so the top of the Nuvi no longer blocks any of my windshield.

a Must Have for any Nuvi owner, IMO

Another update on my GPS situation: A week or so ago it randomly deleted all of my data I had saved on it. Points of Interest, trip history, odometer history, maps, everything. I was upset, but after a few hours I was able to get everything back in working order. Now today the speaker just died on it. The voice is very garbled and choppy sounding. It almost sounds demonic.

You can't even make it out anymore. It's going back to Amazon tomorrow, along with the Friction Mount I ordered. What a piece of junk! Now I have a GPS case that I paid $25 for at Best Buy and can't return because I lost the receipt and I'm pretty sure it's been just a few days past the 30 day return policy deadline. Probably won't be buying a Garmin again.
