GAF HDZ Shingles - Amish

Hello, all.

Our 19 year old architectural roof is on its last legs. As a result, we are replacing it this summer with GAF HDZ shingles. We’re utilizing an Amish company who is certified through GAF.

My question is, how do these hold up? The roofer is using GAF’s tiger paw underlayment, ice and heat shield, new flashing, an GAF newer all metal pivot covers for our roof exhaust’s. Additionally, I was told by their owner they will be using galvanized nails. He assured me they do not rust and will last longer than the roof.

Your help and guidance is appreciated.
 
We had those shingles installed last year; pewter gray. No issues but none expected. Any issues now would be the fault of the installer.
Glad to hear you're using the underlayment & the ice/heat shield. Are you having them install the ice/heat shield around the perimeter or just in the valleys? I realize up north it's required (?) around the perimeter, but it's not here in Alabama. Below is what we did.

Tiger Paw underlayment, StormGuard Ice & Water shield in valleys, behind flashing & siding, along front gable wall, at all roof penetrations, & as well all of perimeter, WeatherBlocker starter shingles, Cobra Rigid Vent 3 installed end-to-end, TimberTex hip & ridge cap, Master Flow pipe covers, drip edge/gutter apron

This was $27,000 for 81sq.

Here's what I had found about the fasteners when I was looking into it. Fasteners must comply with ASTM F1667 and be minimum No. 12 gage (0.105 inch), 3/8 inch diameter head, galvanized, stainless steel, aluminum or copper corrosion-resistance nails. Fasteners must penetrate into the deck minimum 3/4 inch, or through the deck, where the deck is less than 3 /4 inch thick.

Yes, ice and heat around the entire roof to prevent any side rain/ice/snow! They’re also doing everything you stated including the valleys and edges.

Roughly 33 squares although I believe there should be extra.

$15,400. It’s by far the cheapest quote we received. We received other quotes between $19,200 all the way to $35,000. It doesn’t help that it’s a well developed neighborhood with some large homes, but some contractors have pricing that was absolutely insane.

Thanks for the thorough reply. You made our decision even more cemented!

They can install as soon as late July, but should we ask them to delay until even August or September? I heard “horror” stories that roofers damaged shingles from walking on them due to the heat. It sounds far-fetched to me but this is the first time I’ve owned a home which needed a new roof. :(

Does your price include the English driver? That can add a bit of money
When dealing with the Amish...
Best of luck... my roof is 27 years old but looks good but I'm at the pricing stage.
 
In my area in Ohio , GAF shingles have the most problems. There are many roofers who won't install them.

Don't get hung up on the Amish. They are no better than any other good roofing company.

He did not say, but I can only assume. The contract he sent mentioned nothing of it. Their company has almost 400 reviews online and every single one is 5 stars.

Why is that?

I was told their LayerLock has essentially stopped any problems and that other manufacturers will copy their design when allowed to.

I do live in Amish country and just saw a ton of church goers this morning... 😁
If you're a bit anal about people up on the roof as I am, my father had a large roof done years ago by the Amish and they did a good job which I know means little.

However I stopped by and saw 14 Amish on the roof from children to seniors all up on the roof....

The next thing was they were enjoying the plumbing all day at an alarming rate... not being a jerk but I don't want a bunch of people up on the roof.... good luck with it all...
 
Not a lot of GAF installs here from what I found but I think you’ll be just fine. I’m getting Certainteed Landmark Pros installed in a week, with valley metal as well as some standing seam areas, and new gutters and downspouts.
 
Getting a certified GAF roofer is a good thing. They are trained to meet certain standards. It is only two years old but o am very happy with the roof and appearance

Oxford PA this morning about 5 miles away... many live behind my house... Lancaster County PA got too expensive and crowded...

I called several roofers and they all want to get into my attic... . The shingles look very good but the granules are getting a bit thin but no damage otherwise and I have only an attic above the master bedroom as the rest of the house has cathedral ceilings even in the baths...

I'm going to have it done right but not what I wanted as I'm selling it this year.

I am looking at all options and not going to cheap out as the whole place is getting renewed.... most i think can spot a cheap roof..
My neighbors house sold for $200k more than I assumed it was worth as it was a 1930 build and not updated since the 80s
