The WM near my office has had a bunch of G-Oil 5w-30 SM oil on their clearance shelves for quite some time. Full retail price was $26 for the 5 qt jugs and $6.34 for the individual quarts. The clearance prices were $21 and $5, respectively, but I didn't want to pull the trigger quite yet. I patiently waited for the prices to drop further, stopping in whenever I went into the office, which is about once every week or two. The prices never budged and none of it ever sold. When I stopped in for my obligatory check today I asked the cashier in the TLE if the price would be dropped any further. He called over a manager who checked the tags and saw that they had been at the clearance prices since 2/28 and dropped the price then and there to $11 and $2.50. The result? I cleaned them out and walked out 45 quarts of oil heavier.

The final tally: 45 quarts of synthetic 5w-30 (works for both of the vehicles in my SIG) for $102, so $2.27 per quart (plus tax). Normal WM retail cost would have been $245.40, so I netted nearly a 60% savings. Not FAR, but how'd I do?

Second question is about my OCI with this oil. I thought I remember reading on these boards that G-Oil is not good for extended drains. Is that true?

I think you did pretty good. My last oil haul was $2 per quart Nexgen Maxlife, but it wasn't synthetic. As far as OCI, I would feel good with 5-6K.

G-Oil will work fine for the interval suggested by the OLM in both cars. $11 is a great price for 5 quarts of any SM/SN rated oil!

I have to say that was a nice grab! Good job! G-Oil, from what I have read and heard, is not the best for extended OCI, but will do fine for 10,000kms, or 6,000mi on average.

I have roughly the same amount of G-Oil that I got FAR, or about fifty cents a quart after sales tax and postage.
Still, you got a good deal without the aggravation of mailing out many MIRs as well as waiting many months for each rebate check.
Not a bad score.

I think it depends on what bottle style you picked up. The old 5-quart bottles that are pointy shaped on the top were the old formula and were not so good for extended change intervals, but the new bottle style that is more squared off on top is the new formula with the increased TBN.

I'd suggest no more than 5k miles on the old formula and doing a UOA on the new one at 5k and see where it stands.

I got the old pointy ones. Seeing as I have so much, I'll run a UOA at the end of the OLM on each vehicle and take it from there.
