Made me think of that scene from Saving Private Ryan where there was a crash of a plane where a general insisted the plane flying him be fitted with armor plates to personally protect him. Only the pilot isn't told of that it makes it unmaneuverable in a storm.
The cross-section of a typical airliner's aluminum shell would be thinner than a 12 oz aluminum can if made to the same scale. Any heavier than that and it's not getting off the ground.
