fun filter coincidence

So I recently bought 14 Filters from another member here (MBS500)for my neon,(9 Wix 51348's, and 4 Bosch 3330's) and with what i already had stashed, (and doing 6 mo. oil changes) i figured i was set for filters until 2020, if i even have the car that long.

well today i'm @ my local tractor supply, just looking about, and i see some Kohler filters, and i get to thinking it looks dimensionally @ least similar to the filters for my car.

get home, find the manual for dad's Cub Cadet Mower(Kohler engine), find the Kohler part number, hit the web, HAHA! His Mower uses the same filters as my Neon!
so we are both set for some time to come, and i won't have a bunch of "old"(time-wise) filters to pass along to the next owner.(hopefully my Currently 10.5yr old Nephew, fingers crossed)

Yes, been discussed here recently a couple times. The 1348/10241/3614, NG/Puro/Fram, are the same as the -02 Kohler filter, slightly longer than the -01. But, based on the factory oem Kohler filter I cut open after 3 years/2oci's use, I could have easily run that filter 2 more years.

Change those tractor / mower oils with Arnold Palmer's Pennzoil brand and it will surely last until 2020 too....

maybe i missed something, or one or both of us is showing our respective ages, but what does Arnold Palmer have to do w/ Pennzoil??????oh nevermind, quick google settled that... I was too young to remember those. (born Aug.79)

I'm afraid giving him the free filter is about all he would take from me. my car calls for 5w20, the mower, in our temp range, a 30 wt, either straight 30, 5w30, or 10w30.
he insists on using the 10w30,spouts "i'll buy my own d@#n oil" or some such...
think we have a collection of partial bottles of Valvoline conventional, Pennzoil conventional,Quaker State Advanced Durability all in 10w30.... have to look @ the manual again, but i remember it saying to change oil & Filter every 100hrs, he says 50hrs.

actually all our cars take 5w20, my neon, his freestyle, and mom's 09 taurus but he won't let me touch either of their cars, insists on going to the ford dealer. "Dad, i can go over to walmart and buy the exact same oil & Filter for about $20" still insists on going to the dealer. oi.

Simply put, filters are not made for use on any type of vehicle.

Rather, they are made to perform within a series of parameters such as filtration efficiency, burst pressure, flow rate, bypass pressure (if any), size of application, etc.

Look at some of the applications in a Wix catalog for something like the 51348; cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, lawn mowers, small excavators, trenchers, stump grinders, TLBs, etc, etc all served by the very same filter.

Filters are not spec'd for a vehicle; they are spec'd to meet the performance criteria set by the OEM. Lube flow is pretty generic, in a large sense, for any pressure-fed lube system.

This is really no different than the concept of marketing lubes for motorcycles and ATVs. Those oils are not "motorcyle" oils; they are merely lubes that are tailored to a specific application. And there are LOTS of applications that use similar specs. You could choose to run a "motorcycle" oil at $8/qrt, or you could choose a CJ-4 HDEO for $3/qrt, and yet get the same wear protection.

I am not suprised that your filters fit many applications.
I am suprised that you didn't realize this before.

I was well aware that the same filters were used on all kinds of equipment.
the surprise was that these 2 pieces of random equipment at my house, just happened to use the same part. (and a part that had just acquired a seemingly "lifetime" supply of to boot.)

it would be the same for anyone first noticing that HEY! this doo-hickey off Item A, is identical to this thingamjig from Item B! I bet they'd be interchangeable!

In essence, your little find is a boon to your garage stash then!
No suprise as the 51348 (and a whole lot of others) are based on that 3/4-16 thread and associated gasket size.


Tinkering in the garage or barn for the doo-hickey thingamajig factor is a great way to spend a weekend!

My buddy's Kubota lawn mower took the same filter as my G. He sold the Kubota, so gave me his Wix. He swore about that one when he realized his new JD uses the same filter.

Oh well, when he took the Audi, I gave him a half dozen filters with it, so he's ahead anyhow.
