Why not add a cleaner to your oil like Marvel Mystery Oil, AutoRx, Kreen, or Archoil?

Of course everyone will suggest Mobil 1 HM or Valvoline MaxLife HM, but these clean fairly slowly IMO.

An ester-based oil (like Redline, Silkolene Pro, or Motul 300V) will do a very thorough cleaning in 1 - 2 oil change intervals, but it will cost $12 - $20 per quart. So they are a poor value if all you need is cleaning.

What kind of vehicle/ engine/ driving style are we talking about and what symptoms are you experiencing that make you think you need to clean the engine?

Short OCI with dino and something like marvel mystry oil will do the job.

I did 500miles, 1000 miles, and 1500 miles using PYB/Castrol GTX with 1 qt replaced by marvel mystry oil and pur1 filter on my girlfriends elantra that she got with 180k on it.
p1 was taken off at end of 2nd OCI and replaced with purclassic for all OCI going forward.

Engine was disgusting, now it seems much better.

Shorter OCI with cheap oil ,will serve you better than expensive longer OCI using synth. Thats my opinion when it comes to cleaning engines.

Oil needs to hold on to all the little bits of carbon that it scrapes off until its able to "hand it" to the filter, if you overload the filter and media tears you will have highly concentrated carbon bits going back to engine. Thats why I like shorter OCI, and using dino means you wont be throwing money in the toilet.

Does the OP know the engine needs cleaning? I would go with PP and 5K oil changes and forget the MMO.

If you pull the valve cover and its really sludged then more may be needed.

yup - if not bad go easy.
I'd also be sure the PCV is in good working

+ 1.
This engine may not even be dirty.
Nothing wrong with using conventional oils on reasonable drain intervals.
Even if the engine is dirty, there is no cleaning magic in synthetics.

Mobil 1 high mileage.

Dino oil is good stuff. Why do you think it makes an engine dirty or need to be cleaned. I use it all the time and never ever had an engine fail due to oil issues. Just my thoughts.

Can you give us more info on the vehicle and why you believe it needs to be cleaned? 130k miles isn't that much for a modern engine, and conventional oil is just fine as long as you were doing reasonable OCIs.

If it has been cared for properly, then the engine SHOULD be reasonably clean, however, there is no harm in switching to a synthetic. Not knowing what car it is, and how it is driven I would use PP for 5K oil changes with a decent filter...avoid purolator filters for now until they get there tear issue worked out.

I agree with Donald on the PP with a couple 5K mi. changes. Additives may do too much at one time and end up causing blocked oil passages.

Cleaning with oil alone, any oil, is slow going at the very best. Cleaning with oil and MMO is slow going, but better.

Synthetics are better at not leaving deposits and keeping an engine clean, partly due to their composition and partly due to the fact they are rarely extended to their true useful life. But I've seen nothing to support the common notion they are better at cleaning an already dirty engine.

Bad bad bad advice. No fast flushes ever. Especially if there is significant deposits.

Mmo/seafoam/b12/kreen and use a cheap conventional and short intervals of 1500 miles.
Cut open the filters to monitor how much crud is being dissolved and absorbed.
Use the cheapest filters you can find until the engine is clean. You will be throwing them away very quickly and if there is a significant deposit issue even inefficient filters will get clogged up to near 100% efficiency very quickly.
Most importantly follow the instructions on whichever product you choose.

And even more important than that make sure there is even a deposit problem to begin with.

My Xterra takes 5 1/2 quarts with a new filter at an OCI. I've always used 5 quart jugs and made the difference up in MMO. Never had an engine problem and looking down through the oil fill hole, it shines like a new quarter. I'm assuming the rest of the engine is in like condition. I should find out soon as I'm going to have the secondary timing chains and tensioners replaced to get rid of the dreaded whine. Valve covers might have to come off in this process, if so, I'll get a good look.

If it's truly dirty, even SuperTech at Walmart will clean it up slowly and safely. If it leaks, I'd use MaxLife Blend (red bottle) - that will clean it up too without the expensive topoffs.

First determine if it has to be cleaned, then check the PCV system. If you determine it needs to be cleaned add a pint of MMO for the last 1,500 miles of the OCI. Then during the winter months get some PYB and add 20% MMO, don't overfill. Run it for 3-4,000 miles, change the oil and filter. Keep an eye on the oil level during this time. Report back.
