Full flow remote filter or bypass

I figured I would best post this here because of the everyone's experience is remote filters.

I have a Pall spin on hydraulic filter rated at 20 gallons per minute @ 16psid and 99.9% efficient at 2.5µm. The housing also has a pressure switch that closes a contact at 15psi so you can wire it to a light that will let you know when to change the filter or when its in bypass mode (cold start).

This is a nice quality filter that I would like to use as a remote full flow filter if possible, except the bypass valve is 25psi. My stock filter has a 8-16psi bypass valve.

What problems would this cause using a filter with 10 more psi bypass?
Should I just use it as a bypass filter?
What if it were used on the transmission as a full flow filter, is 25psi too high?

My thoughts with the pressure switch are that I could turn on one of my lights in the dash when the filter sees 15psid. Right now I have a low coolant sensor that hasn't worked in a year so my low coolant light stays on(common Taurus problem). I would disconnect that sensor since I have a coolant temp gauged and tie in the oil filter sensor. What do you think?

) ? This is the rating printed on my Gresen filter (also industrial) where the delta P is about 4 psi @ 8 gallons of flow. This has to be @ 100 F (10 weight). Your differential would be much higher in with heavier oil ..at colder temps.

The micron rating of this filter is on par with spin on bypass filters offered by Amsoil. If you had three or four of these in parallel you would probably work well as a full flow. I'd use this strickly as a bypass unit for motor oil ..probably for the trans as well ..except that ATF is probably (I haven't checked the 100F SUS specs of it) near the weight that this was designed for. In the cooler circuit ...it would only be restrictive during warm up ...if that was even a factor. ATF will go way over 100F under any condition.

Is your desire to use this as a full flow because of the convenience of returning it to the engine? If so ...I would suggest the Permalcool oil cooler sandwich adapter to accomplish your goal.


Maybe one of the "aces" will chime in here with more "stuff" for you.

btw- I couldn't get a lock on this filter with your link. Do you have the number printed on the actual filter or know the thread size/count and the base/gasket diameter?? (it would be nice to know if it would actually fit an industrial base that I currently have

Pall is a very expensive filter company. They don't make consumer grade anything. I have a Pall air filteration canister. It's over 2' long and I assume to filter air into the submicronic realm. It's about the size of a Frantz ..but much longer. The media cartrige is rather small, however. I believe the larger chamber/media ratio is to reduce velocity and allow moisture to drop to the bottom of the unit (drain valve).
 
The spinon filter is HC7400SKZ4H and the housing is HH7400B12KZRALL. Its a 7400 series spin on.

The web site doesn't discuss the thread size of the spin on that I could find, but it a 1.5" fine thread. I too was hoping it was the same as parker or others.

This is a "buyable" filter elswhere. It does NOT appear to be available from WIX, Baldwin, or Donaldson (that's all I checked).

So ...I'd say you can live with this ******* size filter in a bypass mode of use.
 
I have a feeling that is a Pall filter without the Pall logo on it. It looks identical to what I have. Pall does do a lot of OEM. They also have 6 & 8" canister sizes. Nice price too.

These filters are not suitable for the applications that "bypass" filters are intended for. They are full-flow, typically used as return line filters in hydraulic systems. They have a single layer pleated element, similar to an automotive full-flow. The dirt loading capacity just won't measure up to a true bypass, (which has a "depth" filter element), which can hold lots of contaminants.
Any attempt to use a full-flow engine oil filter rated less than 25 microns (except LPG/LNG service) will probably run up against rapid loading and high pressure drop. The element is constructed to withstand a continuous 25 PSID pressure drop without failure.

I have sucessfully used this filter on truck and automotive transmissions in the return line from the cooler. It will keep your fluid sparkling, and has plenty of flow capacity.

What brand of filter head do you have with the 1.5" size? Does it have a bypass valve, if so what psi is it?

). That is, I plugged your number into all the X-reference engines that I have and it actually puked one out. I've got a bunch of filter heads from my old plant (salvaged due to closing). All were used in hydraulic applications. Many are 1 1/4 ..unfortunately ..no off the shelf bypasses are available. I have one Pall canister that appears to have been used for air purification. It's a cartridge that is apparently submicronic ..but the replacement filter says "special" and there are no cross references to it. I also doubt that it would take 200+ degree oil. It does look like it would fit two or three TP rolls ..or maybe two paper towel rolls however. This, naturally is about 2' long ..and I'm having a tough time finding any room for it in any of my vehicles, however.

I actually researched filter heads ..and the 1 1/2 thread appears to be rare. Some have only "flanged" ports ..and therefore would be very expensive, I'm sure.
 
Well I decided to make the transfilter a full flow unit. I'm posting the whole story in the transmission section.
