Fuel system cleaners - use in new car?

When should one start using fuel system cleaners? In a new car? Wait until 50k? 100k?

I recommend and practice adding a high quality fuel treat ASAP.

The present fuel formulas lack solvency staying power and you will build up deposits quickly.

crossbow , my choice is 1 oz Fuel Power to 5 gallons gas, low cost and very effective with a slight performance boost. Every tank. Once you have run a months worth of FP then experiment with 0.5 ounce per 5 gallons and let analysis help guide the usage.
One other nice thing about FP is that if you forget to carry a bottle with you it is so active that dropping it in a full tank it will still mix chemically and mechanically from movement.
i.e. my wife and girls never remember ( on purpose ) to add at fillup!

Neutra used as directed is another good choice just don't overtreat.

Techron is good its just too expensive for the bang you get.

I am looking for a good dosage for Nuetra,i.e.The point of diminishing returns.
I currently run close to 1oz to 2 gallons of gas.Approximating to fuel gauge to estimate amount needed and adding prior to fillup.Sometimes a little too much sometimes less.
I know I can't get any one in my family to put in additives either.I fill the wifes car to drive it for a check on it.
I also sent e-mail to Rugerman.I'm looking foward to trying FP!

If one runs a high-quality gas, is an additive really necessary? I've predominantly used Chevron 93 octane and have never had fuel system problems. What about the concept explored in an earlier thread where high wear numbers were assoicated with fuel additive use?

That's a good question. I've run Sunoco 94 octane (the best gas I can get) exclusively. Now at 168k mi., need to add some fuel system cleaner in order to quiet valves (deposits?).

My new car is just over 6 months old. Like Terry said, I use some of these products in light maintenance dosages right from the start to prevent problems. Much easier to prevent deposits from accumulating rather than remove a deposit which has already formed.

At least once each month I add one of the following:

2-3 ounces Red Line SI-1
2-3 ounces Schaeffer Neutra 131
4-6 ounces isopropyl alcohol (drygas - antifreeze)

Lucas UCL; Have not used it but from analysis results I am not impressed. NOX and insolubles remain at non treated levels.


Yes I do see Fuel adds at high levels affect the oil analysis elemental values, Be careful using the really harsh ones, or the power flushes that are sold in dealerships using heated solvents.

What would be a good maintance interval for fuel injector cleaners? (Or fuel cleaners in general?)

This is my first fuel injected car (other vehicle is a 1974 Grand Am), so I am trying to treat it as well as I can with good fluids and frequent flushes/changes. (Based on used oil analysis)

Somebody said in another post that the Chevron Fuel System Cleaner was something like 10 times stronger then what Chevron puts in its gasoline. You can buy it in 12 oz. containers. So would it be better to put the full 12 oz. in and do occasional cleanings, or would it be better to put 1 or 2 oz. in each time you fill your gas tank?

On a related note, when should one begin using oil additives like Lube Control on a new engine? Immediately after breakin, or only after the first oil change?

On a brand new engine,It would be smart to wait until the first oil change.Every manufacturer uses different methods of break-in.Short-change your first ODI(Honda excluded),and you should be good.

Can you elaborate on not overtreating with Neutra? I thought you were supposed to put a whole 12oz. bottle in the tank before fillup. However, I see conflicting reports on it's usage and am confused. Is there a specific amount to be used for maintenence and at what interval?

Terry is Correct, ASAP. IN EVERY TANK.
If only you guys knew what they WERE NOT doing to your gasoline, you'd just have a Kanit-fit!!!!
Put it this way, and I'm not sure If I have it right here:
But if your gas was an OIL, then todays gas would be something like,..... HUmmm, maybe a SC oil from what you should have, YOU guys wouldn't stand for it. Same here except you don't see the forrest 'cause of the fact youre in it.
