Fuel injection with no crank sensor?

According to my haynes manual, my model year (94) Toyota Corolla has no crankashaft position sensor. How does the ECU know what position the crank is at for fuel injection etc., and also determining rpms? Do some systems have a sensor in the distributor or something? I think my Haynes manual is wrong. Any mechanics have some insight for me?

Yes, some older FI systems utilize a Hall-effect sensor in the distributor instead of a crank position sensor at the flywheel.
 
Most older Toyota that have distributor have Hall Effect in the distributor. IF you need a new one ask the parts guy at your parts store for a pickup coil. They run $34 or so for most of them at a parts store.

If you look at the distributor on the older toyotas you will see two wires going up to a connector. THe wires go from the ignitor to the distribtor if I remember right. The wires are going to the pickup coil/hall effect switch.

Some really old tech.s call these "crank position sensors" . I am dated myself now!

Older FI systems didn't need to know the crank position because they weren't timed to the crank. They just pulsed the injectors at a set rate (10x per second on old GM's) and varied the pulse width to set the mixture. So yes, most of the time they were squirting at the back of a closed intake valve. Still beats a carb! The only thing they needed to know RPM for was to know that the the engine was running or how fast it was going, depending on the type of system.
