WOW. That doen't say much good for your gas supplier. I changed my filter at 30,000 miles, then back flushed into a bowl and then cut open. All I found was some small flecks of paint? and some dirty looking watery stuff. I wonder since, this is your first filter change if most of this is leavings from the vehicle manufacture? ed
This was just a post I found when I went to my BMW board today, and thought it was interesting... I wish I knew where this person was from; it does say a lot about the quality of gas.
Looking at this, it's obvious some stations are selling some real crap. In my experience, though, that's much more the exception than the rule. When I changed the fuel pump on my car at about 80k miles, the inside of the tank was clean as a whistle. There were only a few small pieces of grit, which were probably from removing the sending unit.
I have seen some posts in boat forums about people starting to use gas with ethanol and how its cleaning up dirty fuel tanks and clogging fuel filters and/or causing gel. I am sure the high humidity on the water does not help either.
when i changed the civic's filter (105k miles on it, CA car) it has a little amount of that same looking gritty/sludge stuff in the can. not that much compared to the photo, but enough that i'm glad i changed the "lifetime" filter.
