Fuel dilution quandry...

The prevailing premise is that short trips dilute the oil with fuel (because the engine doesn't fully warm up), but long trips will burn the fuel out of the oil. However, the same ones contend that fuel dilution is not reversible... How can that possibly be? If long trips daily does indeed burn it out, why wouldn't one long trip reverse dilution from a number of short ones?
 
The amount of raw fuel in the oil can be decreased by longer trips. The real issue with fuel dilution is the chemical damage the fuel does to the oil. That can't be reversed.

In addition; and some of us forget this. Is the amount of dilution causing wear issues and only a used oil analysis with determine that? Terrible sentence structure but, too tired to change it.
 
If I stick a knife in you and then pull it out even after I remove the knife the damage is done! Sure a doctor can stich you up but he can not undo the damage.

Fuel is a chemical mixture full of different hydrocarbons.....When you dump it in oil it cause chemical reactions that permnately damage the oil. Then due to this chemical damage the oil gets more susceptible to mechanical damage like shearing and damage from heat.....So even if you burn off the fuel the damage it did chemically and physically to the oil molakules remains.

We see it all the time with no excessive fuel in the oil sample but a flash point that is super low.

OK, if the "damage is done", how does an extended drive, even on a daily basis, help at all? That was my original point I am wondering about...

Well some reactions take time so if the gas is quickly flashed off then there is less time for the negative reactions to take place.

That may be one of the most bizarre analogies I've ever seen-and not in a good way.
 
Modern oils can handle a bit of any normal fuel dilution along the way.
Fuel injection and O2 sensors also help a lot.
With any reasonable OCI, we should have no worries.
Cars don't often have a real problem with fuel dilution if nothing is broken.
IMO it is a non issue unless something specific is wrong with the engine/fuel system.
