This is my second UOA for this vehicle. Car sees everything from short trips, highway, city, idling/warm-up, etc. This run was from June 2, 2010 through January 15, 2011. Hot summer weather right through to bitter cold (-21C/-6F).

Items in parenthesis were 'reportable' per the lab. Also note that I did add one bottle of Regane Gumout Complete Fuel System Cleaner about 2 weeks into this run. I also took this sample via dipstick tube and vacuum pump after doing a couple of errands that included a 10 minute highway run (i.e. oil was at temp but not enough to boil off any fuel) on a very cold day.

The wear #s are fine for a 7 month OCI, going through 6.5k miles which includes a hot Ontario summer and the corresponding cold winter.

And it looks like GM's OLM for this engine is right on (looking at the TBN).

It might be interesting to see how the wear #s would compare for a similar OCI using a synthetic.

Over 2% fuel is a lot of fuel ie more than enough to bring the viscosity to the UOA #s you see.

OLM has not yet indicated for a change. I had merely taken a sample from the top side using my sample pump from Fluid Life. I felt that 10,000KM (6K miles) was a decent point in time to sample for my first run of FS. After the sample was taken, I topped off with a 946mL (1 Quart) bottle of FS as the level was low.

This is (roughly) twice as far prior run of the quick-lube bulk 5w30. It had approximately the same amount of fuel. I can only assume the fuel is partially responsible for the shearing. I did have the thermostat replaced 3200KM into the run, on spec that it wasn't regulating the temp quite as tightly as it otherwise should. Some of the shearing may have been temp related as well.

At last check (day before yesterday) the OLM was at 15%.

FS = Formula Shell

Oh man, i should have known that...FS isn't an oil talked about so much on BITOG, though it is a solid performer. Did well in your engine just thinned due to that pesky fuel dilution so common in the winter. Thanks for posting this!

Very nice results thus far with the FS. I just changed my oil yesterday and had a run of FS for 6,800 miles. On my run of FS it was about a 60/40 mix of long highway trips and short urban trips in NYC with a lot of lights and traffic jams. I ran my fill of FS from late August till yesterday. This is a great oil for all seasons. This time around, I'm running Pennzoil Conventional and will see how it goes. Cheers to you on the great results and thanks for posting your UOA.

I take it that this is the SM and not the SN Formula Shell . Was running Formula Shell S.M. in both our YARIS amd now using Pennzoil conventional S.N.($2.40 a qt. ). May go to a TARGET to get some F.S. S.N. for next O.C.s in the spring or late fall . Thanks for the post .

@Chubbs1, mongo161 & odie: You're welcome. I found FS showed well in the used oil analysis I had seen prior to purchasing my box of FS at Costco (approx $29, less a $6 coupon for a steal-of-a-deal $23 + tax for 12 x 946mL bottles). FS seems to be a quiet if not under-rated solid value/performer.

Fyi, this was SM service formulation.

I read an article in the paper yesterday that TARGET is going to buy up some of the ZELLERS stores in Canada. I look forward to some competitive pricing wars in the automotive aisles.

Fellow BITOG'ers, should I run this sump down to 0% OLM or should I drain it? I have enough FS remaining in my stash for another run, but I have also been contemplating putting in some PP that I have built up in my stash.

I agree. You don't really have much to gain by leaving it in there much longer, if at all, but definitely more to lose. You've gotten your money's worth, IMO. Since it did so well for you, I'd use the same set up for interval especially since you have some already.

What oil filter are you using, btw?

Thanks for the response. I didn't get the chance to bring it in on the weekend, and it's far to cold for me to do change it out in the driveway (-18C/-0.5F) today. Will have to part with $20 and get a local mechanic to do it with my supply of oil & filter.

The oil filter in use is a NAPA Gold 7082 (by WIX) which is a cartridge style filter on the Ecotec. This is my first run of this filter, I have heard good things so thought I'd try it out. We shall see what it looks like when it's pulled. I'll try to remember to take some pics of it.

Awesome stuff guy. I think you've got a winning combination working for you.

Drained it today at 11,430KM or 7,144 miles, was at 11% OLM and the filter looked pretty good. Pleats only had a slight warp to them in the middle (not crushed or caving in at all).

Didn't get to taking some pics of the filter as had forgotten to do so and was pressed for time, but at least got the Fumoto valve on there.

Yes, it's part # F107NA which is F-107N Valve (w/Nipple) & Adaptor ADP107 which I had shipped up from QuickOilDrainValve dot-com. Fit perfectly and has plenty of clearance all around, so much so that it was a breeze to install an E-Z twist hose clamp (Koehler Enterprises part # EZ6BK from AutoZone) as a secondary fail-safe to the Fumoto's own spring/twist-lock valve release mechansism.

Not that the Fumoto needs that kind of thing, as I'm not off roading or anything like that. It's more about my peace of mind. Never know should some road debris ever whack it in such a way or a plastic bag gets hung up on it... something like that. I've put the oil pan drain bolt in the glove box for safe keeping.
