He's probably reading this.

I don't know, guys.....wanting to use the owner's manual specified oil in an expensive car that is probably still under warranty is not nearly as outrageous as some of the other accepted practices here at OCD BITOG club.

Oil hoarders, oil bottle sniffers, oil filter blowers, micron measureres, ...geeze-0-pete.

Think about some of the nit picky stuff that goes on here. Better yet, go to some other forums and read what others say about us nut heads.

Kinda agree. You should have read some of the stuff people were saying about the PU threads.

Still a LARGE percentage of people have no concept of 0W-XX oils. I mean zero idea. We just take it as standard stuff.

Wanna bet?

The customer can always take his business somewhere else. My favorite Quicky-Change didn't want to do things my way, so I went elsewhere. Must have been the same with others, 'cause that dude is no more.

You can always win the battle and lose the war. Every time you argue with a customer, you lose. If they get upset, they go and tell at least 10 other people negative stuff about your business. Make 'em happy? They'll just come back again. Why do you think Walmart will let you return ANYTHING? Cause it isn't worth you giving them bad reviews.

Want to win the battle? just to stroke your ego? Be prepared to lose business. No one likes to look stupid, even if they are. You had better be the best at your game and have no other competition if you want to hack off your customers.

I am the MOST disloyal customer you ever saw -- I will walk in a NY second if you cross me -- I work very hard for my money and I won't tolerate any garbage where I spend it, and many other people are the same way.

A businessperson needs me far more than I need them, it's called the FREE MARKET. I vote with my money......

doit... -- "oil hoarders, oil bottle sniffers, ... " LOL. you're right. don't forget the ones that put different brands in the freezer for pour point comparisons.they can't figure out why the wives get pi**ed.and the threads about how pretty/ugly the plastic jugs are. 'gotta love the obsessive/compulsives. the pharmaceutical companies do! to each his own. have a good night, all.

What it boils down to is it is my vehicle, if I tell them I want xxwxx by god that is what I want I am paying for it not you
If my engine melts , it was by my choice no one else

Honestly I don't see how the customer in this case was unreasonable...YOU instructed him to call the dealer and they confirmed exactly what he stated!...

Now in the cases where it is clear that the customer is misinformed I say show them the proof...(printed documented official material from the mfr or parts supplier ect) 9 out of 10 times that customer will be fine with your explatnation.

Don't argue with the customer if you don't have the documentation to back it up.

He argues that we put in the wrong viscosity, I show him the back of the bottle shows 502.00. He still claims that 502.00 is just the standard and whats important is viscosity. I tell him this oil is also specced for Mercedes and Porsches and stuff and there is nothing wrong with it. He tells me he has a Lamborghini so he knows about good oils.

I tell him to call the dealership and ask them and I guarantee this oil is ok for his car.

So when he gets home he calls the dealer and guess what they told him? You have to use 5w30 or 5w40.

He calls my boss and tells him what the dealer said and he agreed to come in and have Syntec 5w40 poured in.

I then call the dealer and ask "I have a 09 Beetle and Id like to know what kind of oil it needs." The advisor told me synthetic 5w30 or 5w40. I ask him what about 502.00, cant I use anything off that list? ie. M1 0w40? He says sure, it's no problem. 5w30 and 5w40 is just what their dealership offers.

So he's coming in tomorrow to drain the M1 0w40 and get the 5w40. I've printed the 502.00 chart, and plan to show it to him. I wish I could just tell him to "take a hike".

Whats wrong with people?

I know it's a PITA but you'll probably have to bite the bullet.

I'd get a clean drain pan ready to capture the M1 coming out. You can find a use for it, I'm sure.

I agree. It's not the customer's fault. I put the blame on the owner's manual for this particular bit of ignorance.

Because my manual specified 5W-20 and I didn't want any potential warranty hassles, I bought extra 5W-20 for the receipts while using 0W-20/0W-30 for winters in my Mazda3 while it was under warranty.
