Customer came in today with a 2009 VW New Beetle cabrio. My guy tells him it takes synthetic and he whines about the price. We used Mobil 1 0w40. He waits until we pour all 6 bottles in at which he pulls out his owners manual and says his car is specced for synthetic 5w30 and 5w40. Meeting VW 502.00 standard. He argues that we put in the wrong viscosity, I show him the back of the bottle shows 502.00. He still claims that 502.00 is just the standard and whats important is viscosity. I tell him this oil is also specced for Mercedes and Porsches and stuff and there is nothing wrong with it. He tells me he has a Lamborghini so he knows about good oils.

I tell him to call the dealership and ask them and I guarantee this oil is ok for his car.

So when he gets home he calls the dealer and guess what they told him? You have to use 5w30 or 5w40.

He calls my boss and tells him what the dealer said and he agreed to come in and have Syntec 5w40 poured in.

I then call the dealer and ask "I have a 09 Beetle and Id like to know what kind of oil it needs." The advisor told me synthetic 5w30 or 5w40. I ask him what about 502.00, cant I use anything off that list? ie. Mobil 1 0w40? He says sure, it's no problem. 5w30 and 5w40 is just what their dealership offers.

So he's coming in tomorrow to drain the Mobil 1 0w40 and get the 5w40. I've printed the 502.00 chart, and plan to show it to him. I wish I could just tell him to "take a hike".

Whats wrong with people?

I hate it when they whine about the price. Its not my fault your vehicle requires synthetic. I get that a lot from bmw customers. If you can afford a bmw why can't you pay synthetic price.

And yes a lot of customers are ignorant. I bet even if you do show him, he will still argue

I had a guy want Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 in his brand new Ford F350 Powerstroke with all the bells and whistles. I told him we could use Rotella 5W40, but that particular M1 isnt rated for this. He got my boss and they went round and round for 20 minutes, finally my boss decided to let him have his M1. I went to break.

I would not do it for free customer is not always right and would tell him to take a hike.

That is unfortunate. Truly a waste of 6 qts. However, in certain circumstances I don't like relying on the judgement of the techs.

This guy thought one thing (viscosity) and it was verified by the dealer. Not that outrageous IMHO.

I once asked a quick lube place to install a MC FL1 filter on my truck. All I got was flack, the manager said the MC was made by Champion and their filters were made by Champion and that they had an ADBV bla bla bla. I wasn't asking for a price reduction. The only reason why I wanted it installed was I was sick of seeing it in my house and I was getting rid of the truck soon. I ended up letting them install their filter and threw the FL1 into the front seat of my car. Months later I saw a guy at the transfer station with an F150, I asked if it had a 300 I6; he said it did and I handed him my orphaned filter.

Sometimes it is nice to have a tech just do what the customer asks.

PS: you were obviously in the right in this circumstance.

Most people are reasonable and easy to deal with, few are just too stupid to understand what their car's needed.

This guy should know what his car needs and asking for the grade he wants when the order was written. Mobil 1 0W40 is spec'ed for his car, he should not make a big deal about what his dealer offers and Mobil 1 0W40 is not on his dealer.

I don't see his request as being too unreasonable.

Really a matter of crossed wires, not pig headedness

I hear you. The customer is always right.

Last night, after a grueling week, I was delivering oil to 7 customers. Some are "leave the oil, check under the mat" easy, most guys want to chat a bit, no problem, others, it's meet in a parking lot do the exchange (not sure if the sting cameras are going). Then there is Mr. Stinkeye. I got his order perfect. Oh, no "I wanted 10w30, I said 7 quarts, not six, is this the 25,000 mile oil? (don't want that other stuff, etc....". Luckily I printed his email. I volunteered to get the other oils for him....."next time" he says...

Dealing with public takes extreme patience. Some days, it's pretty thin.

I feel for the guy. It would suck if someone put oil in my car that meets all the required specs and also has better cold weather performance than the minimum requirement. I'd be [censored].

I've dealt with a few of those....

The customer want's to be empowered, and sometimes abuses the empowerment.

I would not bother to print out anything. The guys wants to be right and no matter how you rationalize it won't matter.

That's smart....... but if you have a troublesome customer, in a shop setting good luck......

I guess a person needs to pick their battles.

The customer was told 5w30 or 5w40 by the dealer. He knows that, and doesn't want to play the numbers dance with his VW. SOund a little ignorant, but still reasonable.

He's probably reading this.

I don't know, guys.....wanting to use the owner's manual specified oil in an expensive car that is probably still under warranty is not nearly as outrageous as some of the other accepted practices here at OCD BITOG club.

Oil hoarders, oil bottle sniffers, oil filter blowers, micron measureres, ...geeze-0-pete.

Think about some of the nit picky stuff that goes on here. Better yet, go to some other forums and read what others say about us nut heads.
