A new one on me.

I bought a refurb laptop from Dell, it is running a fresh install of Win 7 Professional 64-bit.

The Windows Update window has been open for a couple of hours, and it states "Checking for Updates".... but nothing is happening. Yes, it can see the internet.

???

The exact same thing happens to me. I had to disable Windows update.

I tried their diagnostic tools - nothing.

I suspect they are trying to force Windows 10 on users.

Reboot and try again, or go directly to Windows download site, and download the latest Windows updater, and install that, and then give it a try again.

just let it sit overnight turn off automatic update,

reboot

goto windowsupdate

check for updates let it sit upto 24hr it will eventually work

This happens during the first update. It's actually doing something, just be patient. It takes several hours for the first update to download everything

Correct.

Finally took off after being open for nearly 6 hours...

168 Important updates = 983 MB
69 Optional updates

Same thing happened to me when updating a new-to-me dell refurb. Just did nothing at all. If I recall, there was something broken with MS' updater pkg.....LOL

"W7 Ultimate SP1 x64. For some, installing KB3145739 seems to be the magic stick. I did that yesterday and the plug immediately went away. From a total stand still in WU (hours and hours of waiting with no response) to a few seconds after the installation I had 8 important updates ready to be downloaded and installed… Wow what happend? Download and installation was quick and easy.

This morning I searched for new updates and in less than 20 seconds I got the “green shield”, your machine is fully updated.

Thanks Woody for a wonderful and very useful site."

HP ProDesk 405-G1 Desktop 1.50GHz 4GB 500GB
I picked up from blinq new for 56$

rebooted dload/installed KB3145739 rebooted again
and still searching for updates 4 hours later

I'm sure it will find them by morning.... ugh.

I did throw in a 40$ 120GB cs1311 ssd

Plan is to replace ailing Core2DUO computer my Grandma currently has.

I was hoping to get it installing the 100 updates tonight

I had this problem several times doing a clean install (no updates at all) and last time I downloaded IE11 and installed it and within a few hours finally started to download updates.
IE is tightly integrated and the package probably had some Win OS files that were needed. I think Windows update uses IE files also.
Good luck.

possibly Its always worked overnight for me (4x)

if it doesnt i'll try that tomorrow

I am a computer tech, when we do gold images for laptops I build them from scratch.

I usually leave them running overnight, then come back in the morning to install the updates.

Usually there are 2GB of updates that need to be processed.

I am checking for updates. I left my laptop on for an hour. The CPU temperature is 72 C now.

The Windows Update process svchost.exe is using 25% of the CPU (loading one of the cores to 100%). The memory usage for the svchost.exe process is not changing at all.

I've run the Windows Update diagnostic "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab" from Microsoft prior to checking for updates and it detected no problems.

I've been up to date with updates until about 3 months ago when Windows Update started doing this.

I have it set to check for updates, but let me choose when to download, and install. It shouldn't take so long just to check for updates.

I think it's because I uninstalled Microsoft's Windows 10 upgrade tool. I think they are angry and sabotaged my PC.
