First, I'd like to thank all that helped me with your wisdom and advice. Second, thank you Bob, for hosting a web site that allowed me to do the bulk of my bypass filter research.

Well, I installed a Frantz in my 1966 VW hot rod. I plumbed the inlet from the oil pressure T-fitting.

The return line was plumbed through the fuel pump block-off plate.

And hung the unit on a cross-bar that holds the rear bodywork together.

I'm pretty happy with the results.

I'm using a Frantz 1.6" adapter and Scott 1000 rolls.

By the way, I wanted to add, that I got a cr*pload of venom and name calling when I posted this on my favorite VW forum. People love to make assumptions without doing a minute's worth a research on the subject. People freak out when you say you are filtering oil through toilet paper. Now, I'm sure it would have been different if I had described it something like "Tightly woven paper-based high-density filtration media."

Sounds like TheSamba infants.

Nice job. In retrospect, I somewhat wish I'd gone Frantz rather than full flow on my Bus just for the installation headaches for full flow.

Samba wasn't too bad. The guys that gave me the worst grief were on the Volksrodders forum. I guess ignorance is all part of that "macho my car is bad*ss because its rusty" mentality.

Funny thing is, Porsche and (optional on) VW used bypass filters in the early days. But they used pleated cardboard filters, and as we know, far superior to tissue paper.

At least thats what my Pizza Hut delivery guy says when he hands me my pan pizza in a cardboard box.

Thank you! BTW, I noticed you have a 1981 Rabbit Diesel. I had a 1982, 2 door, manual trans. Got an honest 50mpg at 55-60 mph.

Well that sort of surprises me, but yeah, there is definitely a maturity crisis in this country.
Nice car!

BSousa, very nice project. Lots of Bling! Where did you get the adaptor or block that mounts where the oil pressure switch originally mounted? Home made? Nice idea. Are there more pics and info on that other site?
I too must thank everyone here at BITOG for the wealth of knowledge I've learned. I am a VW dealer trained tech and never have the schools explained/taught anything regarding the lubricants needed/used/spec'd for any of the air cooled, water cooled, or diesel applications from VW, Porsche, and Audi. In fact we used to use 20w-50 in the Rabbit diesel in 1977.
I am also a VW owner, for over 35 years, and follow some of the trends going on. I am a regular on "thesamba", named rockerarm. I recently went thru a used engine to install in my daily driver bus. I knew I was going to install a full flow oil filter but with all the new found knowledge about by-pass oil filters, I had slowly procured all the needed parts for that too. Now the bus has a sump, full flow, and by-pass filters for a total capacity of 7 quarts of 15w40 oil.
Its nice to see a sump on your motor as, per Gene Berg, a modified motor can easily cavitate the original sump of its 3qts of oil. Bill

Yeah Brian, thanks for responding. I've seen those adaptors that mount on the fuel pump opening, but what about the device you have where the oil pressure switch hole is? That's the fitting that has my curiosity up. Thanks in advance, Bill.
