I'm out of 0-rings for my 3 Frantz filters and one is now leaking. I've found many on-line sites that sell 0-rings but I don't know what size to order since all my rings are being used. Does anyone know off hand a part number or the diameter, width and thickness of replacement rings, short of ordering them from Frantz for 2 bucks each? LOL Also, I see them available in many different materials. Which is best for oil?

Thanks.
Mark

I'll try and find my vintage Frantz and get a micrometer on it. I'm not sure where I put it.

Just a side note. You'll probably be forced to order a dozen of these things from another vendor to beat that $2 each price after you get done with s&h

L@@K here for the properties of materials Page 3271 "About O ring materials".

Thanks Gary. I did find one guy on eBay selling Frantz rings, 2 bucks and 9.76 shipping each! Ouch, not gonna go for that. May just have to email Debarah from Frantz and order up a dozen.

Viton would be the best for motor oil unless you want to pay 100 bucks for Kalrez. My old Frantz oil cleaners use a round 4 1/8" by 4 3/8" by 1/8". I have had Frantz oil cleaners that I couldn't stop leaking. I have one that hasn't leaked or had the gasket changed in about 25 years. It depends on how much memory the rubber has. Motor Guard has always used Buna. For fuel like biodiesel. I use Viton. I get them from www.mcmaster.com. Viton has a 20 year shelf life under normal conditions. That extra 0-ring you have been saving might not be good.

Thanks Mr. Wood. I remembered that the rings on my 3 new Frantz's are a rectangular cut ring. When installed in the base of the housing, they are taller than they are thick. Like 1/8 thick and 3/16 tall. Hmm, may have to just order up one and measure it and see what it actually is. I wonder if a regular round o-ring would work?

Thanks Gary. I did that and figured out the part number, but found no place to order/price them. LOL

This is the number I came up with for a 4 3/8" O.D. square cut ring with 1/8" cross section.
AS568A-243

I put that number into their "product search" and it came up empty. ??? Not my day I guess.

I have sent them that number in an email and will see what they say.

Hmmm, i've seached all over McMasters and only find round cross section rings. All of mine came with a square cross section and the ones ordered from Frantz came square too. I emailed McMasters and am awaiting an answer on the square rings. Hope my leak doesn't get any worse before I find some.

at 2 buck apiece, who can complain? they are the perfect siza and will last for many years. go to wefilterit.com and gt some.

Since I change the o-ring now each time I change the TP I was hoping to get more at one time and a better price. I don't get multiple uses out of them. They seem to take a "set" once run for a few thousand miles. Don't want any leaks (like I have now!)so I fugure i'll just change them every time.

Turn the gasket 1/4 turn each time you change the TP. One gasket last me years. In fact I don't change them because of leaks,I change them because they become hard and then I can't turn them any more.

You are correct, rotate a quarter turn in the base housing and re-install. It will have a memory, so I rotate about 2 inches of the O ring and insert it in the base and then follow with the rest. That gives the rotation part of the gasket a place to hold so to speak. It takes 3 hands other wise.

do the leaks come from the casister side or the base side? i will be using gaskaginch on the base side of it to prevent leaks. has anybody ever used this stuff? i have had very good luck with it on other applications. i do not think that i will have to do anything other than rotate the canister side on filter changes.

I'm not sure what side the gasket is leaking from since its hidden under the clamp. Its the first one I"ve had leak in a while.

I got a reply frm edm.com with a quote of $100 for 20 rings! Ouch! Guess Frantz is looking better all the time.

also you might try this: clean the filter base where the gasket seats with laquer thinner and a brass brush. also chlean the top can where it hits the gasket. spray both of them with 3-4 light coats of krylon clear spraypaint. the gasket will seal very well against the paint. i just used this on a old nissan motor to stop a valve cover leak that a new gasket would not stop. no leaks in the last week.
