fram'purolater Air filter issues

I looked at two for a 94 Camry.
fram has 55 pleats, purolater about 80, so many in fact that the pleats touch each other on the purolater. i do not know how many the OE Toyota filter has.
it may not make any difference tho as the 4 cyl filter is specified for the v6 too so there must be extra capacity if you are driving the 4 cyl

These extra pleats will make a world of difference. I replaced the original japaneese filter in my Miata with OEM. Original had 80 pleats replacement OEM had 40 pleats. Did not know the difference until I replaced the OEM with a NAPA GOLD. Back to 80 pleats. Milage went up, power went up. The car sounds different when it breathes. My guess is your original toyota filter had the 80 pleats. Some companies are much better at matching the original spec while others figure if it fits its OK.

What effect does more pleats give you? Is it better filtration, or better flow, or both?

I have a new AC Delco filter sitting in my basement and I counted 80pleats on it. I am running a Fram air filter in the car now, but am unhappy with my silicon numbers since I switched to it, so maybe the Fram has less pleats? I will have to go to the store and look at a Fram and count the pleats (taking out my air filter is a big job, the whole intake tubing to the throttle body needs to come off)

For the same media thicknes/density more pleats mean less flow resistance.
And more area to capture dirt.
