Fram Ultra 10575 with a tear in the pleat next to the crimped seam. Tore at both glued ends of pleat. 4500 miles and 6 months. Came off our 17 Ford Edge that sees a mix of super short trips 1 mile and 20+ mile trips. Will shorten up my oic after seeing this. 41,000 miles on the rig.

Just being candid, can't say I'm surprised by the tear. Many times when I comment on post use current XG c&p I'll say "looks like it survived". Obviously, this one did not. That the tear by the widest pleat spacing around seam pleat also unsurprising. 4500 miles in 6 months, not exactly a torture test for a filter. Or shouldn't be.

Thanks for c&p.

Main cause is wide pleat spacing with media that can tear due to bending stress. Can happen on lots of filter brands if the pleat spacing to too wide. Now that the Ultra is non-wire backed blended media, it can tear if the conditions are right.
I hadn’t been around here much for a while and didn’t even realize they changed them. I need to pay more attention!

Oil filters change fast these days, seems like the chaos really started in 2020 with supply chain shortages, etc and everything that followed. Everyone clambering to make changes for many reasons, and companies changing hands put another twist on things. The oil filter world is pretty nuts actually ... Whack-A-Mole game to keep up.

First Brands cheapened the XG Ultra media starting around August 2021. While it took a while to be completely gone from all applications, the two ply full synthetic wire back media for all intents and purposes gone now. WhipCityWrencher one of the first to expose the change on an XG7317 on yt. Since then many current XG post use anecdotes have shown wavy media of varying degrees. The topic takes it to the tear level. As you see, topic XG a shell of it's former self and certainly not a 20k mi. filter.

This was a good thread. Thanks.

So now 2 defects due to the cheapening of the Fram Ultra: Both allowing dirty oil to not get filtered:

[1] Leaf Spring gap.

[2] Tearing media.

Filtering efficiency could drop from 99% @ 20 microns to an extremely low efficiency that would be unsafe for an engine.
