kind of already talked about this but i had a few more Q's. im using a fram ultra right now and I see the OLM going off around a 5K oil change this time around. i dont want to reuse it for warranty reasons. the tough guard looks like an ocod just with more media, how can it be better and go for 10K? i can get mobil1 AFE 0w20 or PP 0w20 and a tough guard oil filter for under $30. the fram XG feels like a waste but im skeptical about the tough guard holding up for the OC.

The TG is rated for 10K miles, so if you're changing oil & filter ever 5K per the OLM then it shouldn't be an issue at all.

Media bonds to engineered fiber end caps better than tough long wearing steel. When the OCI is severe duty, fiber end caps can flow with the wavy media like Neo.

The TG is a capable filter, it can be used to up to 10K. It has better efficiency that the EG and has better flow (synthetic blend media). Use with confidence! I just spend the extra $2 and get the XG, its built like a tank and has better flow that the TG or EG and with better efficiency. Sure its a "waste", but spending an extra $2 over the course of 5-10 months depending on the OCI is worth it for peace of mind. Seriously, $2 spread out over 5 months is nothing.

+1......exactly.....Go with the TG and change out every 5K +/-.

Im on the under utilize wagon of a fram ultra. But ive used TG's with zero issues, OEM filters are still cheaper than TG's for me. Can you get a good deal on OEM filters from your dealer? Guessing they are AC Delco branded?

the acdelco e-core's are cheaper but i won't use them the ph64 is expensive.

I've started to switch from Ultras to Tough Guards as well since I don't run Ultras long enough to get their best use. Tough Guards always look good when cut open, I've even seen them ran to 12K on this site & they look good. They have a synthetic blend media with 99% filtering effeciency versus the Extra Guard's 95% effeciency. The Tough Guard also has a silicone anti-drainback valve versus the Extra's nitrile valve. Don't worry about the fiber end caps, I've never seen anything to prove they are inferior to metal end caps, they might even be better as far as how well the media bonds to the caps. There's no need to be skeptical, the Tough Guard is a great filter.

Just for comparison. A Fram PH3980 orange can has 21% less media than a TG3980, and the Tough Guard has more synthetic blend media. More media plus more synthetics increases filter life. A Fram TG3980 has 10% more media than the equivalent ACDelco PF52 Classic.

From what I can find, I have not seen the Fram filter life numbers any where, even though Fram should have them. Fram rates their filters by mileages, but I wish they would add filter life grams of dirt too.

Email Jay he can probably give you exact holding capacity if you give him part numbers. The Fram Ultras are 22-32 grams range.

His email is [email protected]

I ran a TG to just under 10k with 2 OCI's last summer/ fall. Came out looking great. It is similar to the Extra Guard in terms of construction, but they have much more media. The media even seems a bit more stout too.

It is a great filter for just under $6. 5k wont be an issue for it whatsoever.

The Tg filter has several differences than the EG filter that make it more suitable for 10K OCI's. It has a silicone ADBV, It has more microglass fibers in the media and has more media in the can. It will easily go 10K on all but the dirtiest engines.

I couldn't see me buying the tough guard tonight at walmart. I did buy some mobil1 AFE 0w20 for my next O\C. and for my coworkers 12 Malibu I got some Pennzoil gold 5W30. my friend who works at a parts store got me an acdelco ph64 for bout $4.5 and the 12 Malibu a Delco filter for about $3.
