From every pic I've seen here, the TG is nothing more than an OCOD element with a silicone ADBV, so I'm not sure it's a better filter.

With FRAM, it's "either go Ultra or go home".

That is the exact impression I came away with. Tough Guard is a Silver OCOD with an orange Silicon ADBV (because the consumer can see it). That's it. The actual filtering element looks identical. I wish they would use their Ultra Guard as a model for the attention to detail that should be paid to all their filters.

No, the Toughgard has different media, which is the reason for the higher efficiency, and more of it. Average pleats on the orange can are about 35, the Toughgard is usually 45 or better. I don't think it justifies how much extra they want for it though.

I find it ironic that Frams lower level offerings are rather poor values compared to the competition at that price, while the Ultra is easily equal to or better than a number of filters that cost several dollars more.

Yes, more and more efficient media. I don't really have a issue with the construction as it's engieered. For me the biggest problems with the latest posts was the QC.

There is more media in th TG but at least on my current example it was not really useable. The pleat spacing was so random that many of the pleats were so mashed up against the adjacent pleat, that section of filtering media was unuseable. The oil had no path to go through it.
