92 Fleetwood 454 TBI motorhome is in question. Rarely driven however started monthly sometimes bi weekly and oil changed out annually. 80k miles and it's gonna be second LOF since I took ownership. Rotella T5 10w-30 will be oil used. Undecided on filter. PO wasn't the best on maintenance so I want a decent oil filter to help clean/protect engine. Maybe 500-1000 miles annually. Lots of hills and hot Nevada Summers and cold winters.
Thanks

A decent Oil Filter will not clean or protect this Engine.

I have a 99, 7.4 Vortec Motorhome and use a PF1218 as my filter. I see no issues with Fram, despite what some say about them. I prefer AC Delco as they are very well made filters, but have used the TG filters in the past, and examined them after an oil change, and saw no failures of their construction So yes I would recommend them.

I would also go with a 5w40, especially out there in the desert. Something like Valvoline or Napa 5w40 diesel oil for sure, as they are both spark rated and have a high TBN.

True, but if the engine is a bit dirty from lack of maintenance and the OP uses a good oil that will clean it up some, then a more efficient filter will help capture that "clean-up debris" better.

Don’t bother to just start it every few weeks, leave it be and keep the battery charged til you are ready to use it.

What are your thoughts behind this statement? In other words, why do you advocate against periodic starts.......provided temps get up to spec for a bit and so on? :)

I just think it does more harm than good. What benefit is there to starting it for 20 minutes and letting it idle? It’s not warming up enough to cook off any moisture and the engine is fine sitting for 6 months or more until he uses it.

What are the benefits of starting it every 2 weeks?

If it's going to be started up, it needs to be driven far enough to get the oil to full operating temperature for a decent amount of time. Can't let it sit too long either, I'd say don't let it sit for more than 3-4 months (while keeping the battery charged up of course) without driving it like described above. And keep the gas treated with fuel stabilizer until it's pulled out for more frequent use.
