Fram is slipping in the air filter category

it doesn't look like a filter.

with the fram air filter, the engine coolant temp guage reach to the middle mark fast. ( between c and h )

with toyota oem air filter, it take little longer than fram to reach to the middle mark. ( between c and h )

I don't know it is good or bad.

I will report average mpg in 4 days.
 
I bought a case of 3 fram filters for my F250. The pleat spacing is terrible on them and the foam is rock hard. Can't say Ill be buying anymore after I use them up. Ive been using the tough guard filters in my F150 and the quality is just the opposite. They are well constructed and I will continue to use them.

Both filters are made in canada so I was expecting the quality to be similar but thats just not the case.

The Fram tough guard I put in my Jeep a couple months ago (the lightly oiled one) was well made, good pleat spacing, etc. It fit in perfectly, just like the Purolator that was in there before it.
 
here are the result.
I have been using fram filter for a long time.
last 4 average mpg with fram 31.4, 32.7, 31.5, 31.7 mpg.
Toyota OEM air Filter 30.6 mpg

My driving style is the same. same route. I don't know why my average is 30.6 mpg. maybe something have to do with the filter.

I believe the Filter I bought is fake. I bought it from ebay for $8. It doesn't came with the Toyota Original box. According to the filter, it printed 17801-20040 MicroTech. I did some research. china company manufactured those kind of filter.

If the filter is OEM, it should say Toyota or Denso. I don't know what I do. I have to run 10k and buy another one from other seller...

I will try to disconnected the battery, and see if it help. anyone here willing to help ?

I fuel up every 4 days. 1 day was cold. It doesn't matter. Overall I have been hitting 31 mpg or higher.

3 more fuel up and I will know better.
 
I was shocked when I calculated it. 30.6 mpg seem low. I was expecting 32-33 mpg. If you look at my fuelly report, most are 31 or higher.

maybe fake OEM air filter is not doing good for the engine. it is not getting right amount of air to the engine. so it effect gas mileage too. I also sees it take longer for the coolant temp guage to between c and h .

Possible, but consider that typically an air filter with less restriction like a K&N won't give you much in the way of gas mileage improvement alone.

I don't think over-restriction is a problem. Could you see light through the new one? Unless it was thick and non-porous like cardboard paper, I think you should wait a while before concluding the filter is hurting MPG. I'd be more concerned if it were allowing in worse unfiltered amounts of particles.
 
it is possible that the filter is fake. or it will take couple hundred miles for the filter break in process. it may have been bad gas.. I use same chevron station all the time. it doesn't matter. even top tier may have bad gas sometimes.

I will monitor 3 to 4 fuel up about the mpg. If I see low mpg, I may buy another air filter that have denso or toyota printed.
 
my mileage went up this fuel up. 495.1 miles driven. 15.486 gallons used. 32.0 mpg.

the previous was 30.6 mpg.

my conclusion is it may have been bad gas, or the air filter has been break in.

this time when I buy my air filter, I make sure it say Toyota or Denso printed on the filter.

Nothing like making absurd conclusions ! There are so many factors affecting gas mileage, but you conclude it must have been "bad gas, or the air filter has been break in".

same route. use cruise control. never over 66 mph, warm up my car 2 min in the morning ( normal ). brand new air filter. 30.6 mpg.

2nd fuel up. 32 mpg. If you do the math, 32 mpg give me 21 miles more over 30.6 mpg.

So I think brand new air filter take about 500 miles to improve mileages.


you can call me stupid, thats ok. I always looking for great mpg. My best was 33.9 mpg last summer. 2006 toyota camry v6. I am looking to break that record. my car recommend 29 psi. I will use 34 psi max. I have chevron supreme motor oil gf5 ready to put on my next oil change.

I just received a Chinese manufactured Fram CA9997 filter for my Subaru ($7.20 from Amazon) and am satisfied with the quality. Right size, a felt gasket, and decent looking media. The Wix that is in the car now is also of similar quality, but costs twice as much as the Fram.

If my UOA with the Fram installed shows low silicon, I will be getting some more of these Frams

I looked at 3 CA8205's for my Jeep @ WM reciently. They were junk. Made in Mexico. The metal backing was buckled and the edge that keeps the filter in the box was non existant.

These filters wouldn't even fit the application they were designed for. Bummer because I liked the Fram Air filters.

So the outside temperature, was exact every day, same winds, same road condition, same amount of red lights. You apply the same out of pressure to the gass pedal every single time too? Like the guy above you said, there's other factor, and I can keep going with this.
 
For the record, I once had Fram air filter failure, posted about it a couple of years ago. The rubber seal deteriorated from heat and let the dirt in. It was made in China IIRC.

BTW, air filter will not affect MPG by a measurable degree, sorry.
