Fram Extended Guard

I have a FRAM Extended Guard in my stash from about two years ago.

How does this compare to the newer Fram Ultra?

How many miles do you think it could be run? It looks OK and I guess about 10,000 as I have in the past taken OCOD Frams to the 6000 mile mark and Tough Guards to 8000.

I wouldn't hesitate running it 10K.

I think the older Extended Guard XG filters were rated at 10K on FRAM's website. When they changed the design of the XG the efficiency went up a hair, and the duration of use went up to 15K.

Tough filters, I can't tell any difference with my untrained eye pertaining to internal construction and media. Great filter that I would not hesitate to run 10k in a halfway decently maintained engine.

I ran Fram OCOD in my LS400 up to 14-15k miles more than once without problem.

I thought the first generation XG had one synthetic layer and one cellulose or blend layer. The second generation XG has all synthetic media now.

I have ran Fram EG in my 2 cars and my truck for the past 5 years and have never had any issues. My oci/filter change for all the above was about 6k on the cars and 10-12k on the truck.

As posted, they were advertised as 10k filters and I imagine there is fudge room beyond that.

Looks and feels the same to me. As I said, I am no filter expert but I have cut open quite a few. The media seems the same with a fibrous synthetic media. Definitely different from M1, Bosch D+ (cellulose) both of which filters I have cut open at 15k (Mobil 1 M1-101 and Bosch D+ 3323) and they looked like they could have gone another 6k OCI easily. The X-Tended Guard is wire backed so I can only imagine it would last at least the same. Use with confidence.

Something in the media had to have changed between the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen XG because the 2nd Gen has a better efficiency rating.

The pics on the site look the same and it still says dual-layer media. Same principle better medias maybe. Think I'm going to watch for these to go on sale and pick some up.

XG was still a Full Synthetic media but it was different than they use today and slightly less efficient. Rated for 10K and built pretty much the same as the current Ultra, Full Synthetic media, wire backed and with a silicon ADBV.
