This oil filter was installed for almost exactly a year in my Durango. The filter construction was solid. You'll see some metal flakes, which is what I'm finding in almost every filter I cut open.

I think the darkness is because I cut the ends off just before taking this picture, close to the ends, it appears to have held more oil than in the middle. There was no carbon build-up at all. The engine only has 98,000 miles and doesn't use any oil.

Thank you for the cut and post

I like how you got the media off the cartridge so cleanly! That's awesome

What did you replace it with? The $4.99 Napa Platinum sale is still on for another week.

Sharp utility knife does wonders.

The new filter is a Hastings and the oil is Rotella 10w30

I looked at the filter media again this morning with about 10x magnification and yes, the black color is tiny black carbon particles. Now I'm wondering if the Delo 5w30 I ran has good cleaning properties, or maybe the carbon is from agglomeration because I ran the oil for a year, including our cold winter here, or both?

Small carbon particles are probably caused by fuel rich blow-by past the rings. I would always see more carbon particles in the filters I've cut open when the oil and filter were ran over the cold winter months where there would be richer cold starts. And yes, a few small metal particles in the filter are typically normal, seen the same thing. Thanks for the C&P Wayne.

I have an 2006 ecotec that started this carbon in the filter business at 120,000 miles. It also started to burn a little oil around that time. Now at 220,000 miles it puts a lot of carbon in the filter, especially during the cold months with short trips. Oil consumption has also risen to 1Qt / 3,000 miles. Wear metals are still good/low. I think carbon in the filter is a sign the rings are wearing. Maybe the injectors need cleaning.
