This evening I was picking up a few things at our local Walmart, and as always I went over to the oil section to look around. After seeing nothing new I headed back to the car care section and saw a bunch of products on clearance, including oil! I picked up a 5 quart jug of Castrol Extended Performance SN (the newest one, with titanium, gold bottle etc) for $15, great deal right? But its 10w30, and the Uplander takes 5w30. This is the GM 3.5 V6. I have mentioned before it is a short tripper, but I figured if I use it during the summer the engine should be just fine. I just changed the oil not too long ago, so I have at least 3-4 months or more before its due to be changed again. In all likelihood it will probably not be changed until July, maybe as late as August. Now that I think about it the oil would be in use from August-December, so I would have its fare share of cold starts. Should I return it as I have no application for it other than the Uplander, or go ahead and use it? I do not want to do ANY damage to the engine by using a thicker than needed oil. I just couldnt pass up a full synthetic extended performance oil for $15

You would not do any damage using 10W30 over 5W30 in Florida.
FWIW, I had 10W30 Maxlife in my wife's 3.5L Maxx until I changed it in January and it was a heck of a lot colder here.

At $15 a jug, I would buy all they had.

+1

in FL, you're good. if you were in MN, and winter, then you MIGHT have an issue. but probably not.
as recently as 2010 (not knowing any better) I ran 10w30 in everything, year round, cuz that's what we had always used...

I could find a lot of things to worry about with an nine year old Uplander at 111K.
Using a 10w30 in Florida wouldn't be one of them.

It should be better than 5W30 here, the very few cool days (we don't have cold days, 32F is barely cold and they come in late January if at all) we get here in December doesn't compensate for the lots of 90F days in October and November, which a 10W30 with less VI's will be better for. JMO

Ok thanks for easing my mind. It will be going in when its due for its next oil change. And 901Memphis, it even says on the side of the bottle "not recommended for extended use in severe applications such as racing, excessive idling, short trips etc).

As far as physical damage goes, no, you won't harm it. However, you've mentioned this is a short tripper, does it get driven enough to get up to temp? I only ask because from what I've seen on Castrol Edge Titanium, the difference on one Pds @40c, startup, is about 6 points between the 5w30 and the 10w and only about .2@100c. Another Pds showed a difference of over 12 points between temps @40c for the 5/10w30 and about .5 @100c.
I'm not trying to steer you away from the oil, I'm just stating that at startup you want the lightest oil possible, especially for a short tripper that doesn't get up to temp. That is where your fuel economy will take a hit with a heavier than necessary oil. Once warmed up you'll be fine.
It's a great deal you got on the oil though, I'm just throwing in another train of thought.

(Not looking to start a war with the above with anyone, it's Sunday and I'm chilling, so no wars today.

It rarely gets up to temp, same with my Accord. Again only reason I got this was because it was $15. Maybe the thicker, more shear resistant oil will help with fuel dilution =P Just kidding, we all know todays 5w/0w-30's are plenty shear resistant. Ill just give it a go and Ill let you guys know how it works out. This engine is noisy at hot idle so maybe this will quiet it down some.

Probably until I run out of oil to add to it. It consumes oil, and I have some laying around to top it off with, once I run out of that I will probably change it. Should be some time around 40% on the OLM.
