Formula Shell $1.79, MC $2.37 Havoline Syn $3

After looking it seems the best local deals without depending on Rebates or Sale price is Formula Shell for S1.79 (Fred's), Motor Craft Synthetic Blend $2.37 (WalMart) and Havoline Synthetic $3.00 (Big Lots). All are available in 5w-20, 5w30, and 10w30 for the same price.

What everyones opinion for 3500 - 6000 mi Changes (6 month OCI). 50% City / 50% Highway. 1.6L DOHC (Hyundai) with 3.5 Qt Capacity. Going to try the Havoline TFC-21 (Purolator Premium Plus) for $2.19 for an oil filter. If I have any startup noise I will try a different filter. Warranty requires new filter every 6 months or I would just use Pure 1 changed every other OCI.

Im leaning towards the Havoline Synthetic for an extra $4.24 an OCI. I dont think its really needed but it kind of gives me that warm fuzzy feeling.

I saw Formula Shell for $1.79 at Target too

But not every target seems to carry motor oil, just the larger ones it seems.

I would change oil and filter every 6 months or 5k miles with synthetic blend. With M1 or Valvoline full synthetic, I go with 1 year or 10k miles and change a filter half way through. Pure One seems to do the trick.

I check my oil about 2 or 3 times a week to make sure it is not low or dirty. If looks dirty, I change the filter since full synthetic oil exceeds manufacturers' requirement. The trick is to change the filter as that add about half a quart of clean oil and the filter will clean out the impurities.

For a 6 month OCI formula shell would easily get the job done. There some good used oil analysis of it.

With only a 3.5 quart sump, be sure to change more frequently. I would not go beyond 5K personally using Group III synthetic - with a sump that small. I change my oils pretty often.

You wouldn't like me then, I change my oil+filter every 3 months and change the coolant every 6 months. For some reason, the engine stays clean that way.

Why change the coolant so often? I change the coolant every 5 years and the manual states 10 years. I use M1 or Valvoline synthetic oil, so I know the engines are well protected. It is the filter job to clean out impurities. An added bonus is the magnetic drain plug in addition to a 2 magnetic strips on the oil pan. They keep the shaved metal from doing additional damage to the engine. I check for shaved metal at each oil change and there is barely any in the older cars and none in my personal vehicle.

What about honda civics which have sump capacities that size and run 10k on dino no problem. I think he'd be just fine with the Shell.

Because coolant can build up acids over a period of time and start eating your gaskets up. Not to mention the potential for corrosion of engine interior surfaces. And besides that, it's only about $12 a gallon spread over 6 months = cheap insurance.

Well, I'll tell you what I do for my environment:

I recycle all my newspapers, aluminium cans, glass, plastics, tin cans, and yard waste. And I don't make any money off of it either, I actually have to pay the city to bring their trucks by every Friday to pick up my recycles.

So does the engine in my big truck. Of course it only gets 30,000 mi OCI (Dino HDEO) and 500,000 mi CCI (OAT Coolant).

You put quite a bit more strain on the environment when you drive your auto. Are you going to stop driving...or continue the hipocracy?

Do get a grip folks...sheesh...
Maybe you could try using propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol, if you are so worried about the environment. And besides, don't responsible folks dispose of their fluids in a proper manner? Or is dumping some coolant in the storm drain once in three years acceptable environmental behavior?

I'm sorry for the rant, but this thing has really gone too far. Next time you want to chastise someone for their environmental behavior..take a good look at yourself first.
That will make it much easier to hold your lips together.

We have two Hyundai vehicles. Am running MotorCraft 5W20 now but bought enough Havoline 5W20 Synthetic at Big Lots for several oil changes @ 4000 - 5000 miles or 6 months for the same warranty reasons you mentioned.

Recommend that you use only Hyundai OEM Filters.
