I would like to scan into my computer permit forms from the cities i work in, and be able to fill them out on my lap top, skipping the hand writing part!

Does anyone here do anything like this?

If so, what software do you use? Or would suggest i use?

Once you scan it, it is now an image. Your computer does not know which parts are text, which are lines or anything. "Filling it in", therefore, will simply involve using a program that allows you to put text onto an image.

Are you using Windows, Mac or Linux? We'll find an appropriate program to add text to an image once we know that.

I haven't put pen to paper in years.

I'm guessing the cities have the forms in PDF files somewhere. You might ask the appropriate agencies, or check their websites, to see if they have fillable PDF forms.

But I wouldn't have much hope. Even the IRS doesn't have all their forms in fillable files.

You can import the image as a background into MS Word. From there you can type on top of it, save it, and print it out.

its a windows vista based computer uc50ic4more,

nyquist, once the form is filled out i would like to just fax it from my computer to the city, i am trying to do this right from the truck or the job site wirelessly

some of the forms can be found in PDF, and others are not available that way currently.

The .pdf's would still have had to have been authored with the capability to fill in some text areas. Many, many aren't, and without the ability to insert text, you're in a worse boat than you'd be with an image, unfortunately.

If you have Office 2007, you can download a plug-in from MS that allows you to save the final work as a PDF.

Or you can just install the free CutePDF.

As for filling out (putting text onto an existing PDF), you can use FoxIt. But you have to pay for the ability to save changes. But in the end that's no different than importing a background image into MS Word and typing over it.
