I had to do an oil change on the Malibu today so I put her up on the ramps, drained the oil and pulled the filter.

Went to the stash and found that I didn't have any Dexos Gen2 oil and no UPF64R filter. So I threw in some 2 year old Dexos Gen1 Castrol EP and a Fram XG10575 filter that I had left over from the Siverado that I used to own.

May the car gods forgive me!

Let those among you without oil cast the first rod.
Go wash in the used oil you drained, and say three "I gotta place an order with RockAuto."

don't worry, I have a half-fast change coming up this week in the freezing freezing cold. Want to get my M1 0w30 in to handle it, but it's going to be quick and hopefully not too dirty.

You know that is going to blow up ... right ... how in the world did you get caught without at least three changes worth of the right stuff for all of your cars, and the neighbors cars and the relatives cars, and the kids cars...

Now you have to flush like 6 complete changes through it to get that stuff out before it eats a hole in your crankshaft...

It sounds like you did your car a favor instead

+1

Not really seeing an issue here since you used what the car called for. Used top tier oil and filter nonetheless too.

I guess my next question is since you think you sinned, what was your plan with the Castrol EP? Hopefully not lawnmower or bookend duty. Lol.

Not what you're wanting to hear, but I would step it up to 0w40 in that thing with the warranty is gone personally.. Because you asked for advice and all. (*sarcasm*)

Wasn't this Malibu recalled for LSPI?
And GM said the oil had to be changed with only ACDelco 5W30 in the US and M1 5W30 in Canada?
:^O

Seriously, I'm sure the ECU's programming was modified to help limit LSPI events during the recall and having an issue in one particular OCI is unlikely.
Personally, I prefer to play the percentages as I see them and stick with d1G2/d2/SN+ formulations exclusively, but I don't see it as a life or death issue. I must say that having my car recalled for LSPI made a profound impression upon me, though...I was already aware of LSPI from this and other sites and using M1 5W30 formulations that were low in calcium (including an ESP I have read is not available anymore).

Apologies for this not being directly related to the OP, but I did find an excerpt that is supposedly from a GM TSB that I thought was very interesting. We had a couple threads on here where we were wondering why the GM 1.5l DIT was having issues while the 2.0l seemed to be OK by comparison.
"General Motors has identified an issue with the use of certain oils in the 2.0L turbo engine (LTG) that could result in premature engine piston failure. When performing an oil change on the 2.0L turbo engine, it is required to use a low calcium oil, ACDelco Dexos1 Full Synthetic 5W-30. If ACDelco Dexos1 Full Synthetic 5W-30 is not available, use Mobil1 Full Synthetic 5W-30 oil or Mobil1 Extended Performance 5W-30."

I would highly suspect that the ECUs for the 2.0l DIT vehicles have also had their programming modified to help mitigate LSPI...

^^^^^^^

I agree. Castrol gold EP is a very good oil. If that's bad in a pinch then we are all in trouble.
